The Department of History at UNCG seeks candidates for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Public History starting January 2026. The department offers a B.A. in History with a Public History concentration, an M.A. in History with a Museum Studies concentration, and a Ph.D. in U.S. history with a minor concentration in Public History. UNCG is a Minority Serving Institution and fosters collaboration and community-engaged research. Position Summary

Stand-out applicants will have a strong track record in public practice, demonstrating imagination and skill in working collaboratively to connect history or historic sites with public audiences. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a dynamic research agenda; to inspire and train undergraduate and graduate students; and to join with existing faculty in program administration and long-term planning. Applicants with demonstrated experience in historic preservation, material culture, digital history, community-engaged practice, and/or oral history are particularly encouraged to apply. Although this is a tenure-track position, an appointment made effective January 1, 2026, will be as visiting assistant professor (pre-tenure-track) for the spring semester, with the tenure-track appointment commencing August 1, 2026. The visiting appointment is necessary to effectuate a normal tenure clock. Candidate must hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in History or a related field by January 1, 2026. Responsibilities Include

Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public history and in the candidate’s area of specialization, both in person and online. Continuing an active program of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity. Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Providing service and leadership for the Public History programs and to the department, college, university and community. Minimum Qualifications
