Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Department of History at UNC Greensboro is seeking candidates for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Public History starting January 2026. Candidates must hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in History, Public History, American Studies, or a related field by January 1, 2026. The geographic area of specialization is open.
The department engages in teaching, research/creative scholarship, community-engaged research, and mentoring with twenty full-time faculty and an enrollment of 250 undergraduates and 60 graduate students.

Position Summary Stand-out applicants will have a strong track record in public practice, demonstrating imagination and skill in working collaboratively to connect history or historic sites with public audiences. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a dynamic research agenda; to inspire and train undergraduate and graduate students; and to join with existing faculty in program administration and long-term planning. The position expands a thriving public history program offering a BA in History with a Public History concentration, an MA in History with a Museum Studies concentration, and a PhD in U.S. history with a Public History minor. Applications from candidates with experience in historic preservation, material culture, digital history, community-engaged practice, and/or oral history are encouraged.
During the initial period, the appointment will begin as visiting assistant professor (pre-tenure-track) for the spring semester with the tenure-track appointment commencing August 1, 2026, to effectuate a normal tenure clock. A Ph.D. in History or a related field must be earned by January 1, 2026.
Responsibilities
Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public history and in the candidate’s area of specialization, both in person and online.
Continuing an active program of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity.
Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
Providing service and leadership for the Public History programs and to the department, college, university, and community.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should hold or anticipate holding a Ph.D. in History or affiliated fields by January 1, 2026.
