Position: Public Safety Officer I - Armed Location: Illinois Masonic Medical Center (IMMC); Chicago's North Side, near Wrigleyville Neighborhood Employment type: Full Time Hours: 3pm-11:30pm Responsibilities
Provides security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion in challenging circumstances; enforces safety rules and regulations; maintains a professional appearance and demeanor; ensures uniform and equipment are in good repair. Performs interior and exterior patrols, including inspections to identify vulnerabilities, hazards, and fire conditions; audits Interim Life Safety Measures; manages patient valuables; conducts contraband searches; provides information, directions, and assistance to patients, visitors, and staff; controls traffic and questions unauthorized persons. Prevents, responds to, and investigates workplace violence; responds to combative or threatening individuals; serves as a primary resource for de-escalation. Plans, prevents, practices, and responds to emergencies including lost or abducted infants, fires, and active threats; responds immediately to emergencies and may intervene physically as required per training. Investigates incidents on Advocate Aurora property and prepares timely, accurate reports; escalates complaints to leadership with supporting documentation. Performs liaison rounding to build partnerships with departments; delivers security awareness education to staff. Liaises with state and local law enforcement and first responders; coordinates prisoner/patient guard activities to ensure policy compliance and safety. Maintains current Department training standards in radio communications, de-escalation, CPR, restraints, Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser), and other department-issued equipment per the Annual Training Plan. Licenses, Certifications, and Training
Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO) from IAHSS required within two years of appointment; recertification not required. Valid driver’s license. Illinois FOID card or DOJ Concealed Carry License (CCW). Must meet IL regulatory licensing requirements and obtain a Firearm Control Card (FCC) for Proprietary Personnel within 90 days of hire. Certified in Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) use within 90 days of hire and periodically thereafter. Education
High School Diploma or GED Experience
Typically requires 1 year of experience in security, public safety, or customer service, including responding to emergent situations and resolving issues that pose risks to patients, visitors, staff, or property. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Completion of State of Illinois 40-hour armed course with semi-automatic pistol endorsement (for Illinois team members). Willingness to carry a department-authorized firearm on duty; firearm and level III holster purchased and maintained by the officer per policy. Annual handgun qualification: 70% passing score on the State of IL Mandatory Annual Active Duty and Retired Officer Handgun Qualification Course, unassisted; probationary officers must qualify within 90 days and attend the first date within probation. Ability to exercise mature judgment and maintain courtesy and tact in dealings with staff, patients, and visitors, even under verbal aggression. Ability to quickly assess dangerous situations and take appropriate action. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Computer skills to document work (e.g., Word, Excel, web navigation, database entry). Background check, drug screen, pre-placement physical and psychological screening post-offer, and ongoing compliance requirements. Ability to defend self and others if necessary and to detain a non-cooperative individual when required. Ability to communicate via radio and telephone with clear diction. Ability to interact professionally with all team members, patients, and visitors, especially in difficult circumstances. Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
Must sit, stand, walk, and drive throughout the workday; lift up to 35 lbs.; push/pull up to 35 lbs.; safely operate and maintain a firearm. Visual requirement: 20/20 vision in both eyes, or correctable to 20/20 with corrective lenses. Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation hazards; protective clothing as needed. Operate all required equipment; frequent exposure to aggressive behavior and high-stress situations; ability to handle personal stress and potential violence. Physically fit to walk all areas of the facility and grounds, to restrain individuals as needed, and to assist nursing staff with lifting patients of all sizes.
