The Controller is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center (JCC) and its subsidiary, the Mizel Arts and Culture Center (MACC), 501(c)3 organizations, by managing a team of professionals responsible for accounting and finance. The Controller supplies management with all financial information necessary for making policy and fiscal decisions, supports internal controls, and assists with effective financial management of the agency. The Controller also enhances strategic leadership by implementing plans and policies. The JCC is comprised of eight business centers (fitness and aquatics, tennis, early learning school, sleep-away summer camp, day camp, theater, engagement programming, and room rentals).

Responsibilities

Direct the preparation of financial reports, including statements of activities, financial position, reports to funding agencies, tax returns and reports for the Executive Team (CEO, CFO, COO and CDO), the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors and others as needed.

Provide timely and accurate performance measurement and analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends to assist the Executive Team, the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors and other senior management.

Work with the Chief Financial Officer to continually improve budgeting and forecasting processes by educating department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.

Optimize cash management: Manage bank and deposit relationships and implement strategies to enhance cash position. Maintain monthly cash flow projections and reporting with a minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.

Coordinate annual examination performed by external auditors and oversee tax compliance. Ensure a successful annual audit by timely preparation of PBC documents and supporting schedules, and timely issuance of financial statements to meet deadlines.

With the CFO, evaluate the finance team structure and plan for continual improvement of the group’s efficiency and effectiveness, while providing professional and personal growth opportunities for individuals.

Assist the CFO in planning, developing, organizing, managing and evaluating the organization’s fiscal functions and performance to achieve annual budgeted goals and long-term sustainable growth. Manage the team responsible for financial reporting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, banking, treasury functions and accounting for grants and donations.

Work with the Development team and department managers to ensure grants and donations are recorded and tracked consistently across the organization.

Participate in developing the agency’s plans and programs as a strategic partner. Evaluate and advise on long-range planning and the introduction of new programs and strategies.

Develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Collaborate with department managers to ensure financial reports are accurate and complete, and that they are understood by stakeholders, enabling effective solutions to business challenges.

Provide strategic financial input and leadership on issues affecting the organization (e.g., membership packages and pricing, employee benefits, capital investments).

Advise professional staff on the financial implications of contracts entered into by the JCC.

Qualifications

7+ years of experience, including some not-for-profit work, with proven leadership.

Comfort with computer systems and software technologies and the ability to use them to drive efficiencies.

Forward-thinking, creative, with high ethical standards and a professional image.

Strategic planner with solid technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and operational focus.

Well-organized and self-directed, with ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Strong communication skills for interaction with staff and volunteer leadership.

Educator by nature, trustworthy, and willing to mentor department leads and staff.

Decisive with a big-picture perspective and familiarity with business operating systems.

BA in accounting or related field; not-for-profit experience required. CPA preferred.

Experience with Financial Edge, Amilia SmartRec, Campminder, and Salesforce NPSP preferred.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents; respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Physical demands: The position requires remaining seated for prolonged periods; occasional standing, walking, handling objects, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. May lift/move up to 15 pounds. Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: Open (shared) cubicle/workspace area.

Benefits Overview Full-Time employees are benefits-eligible. The JCC contributes a portion of medical, dental, and vision plan premiums, and pays 100% of Basic Life Insurance, AD&D, Short-Term Disability, and Long-Term Disability coverage for benefits-eligible employees. We also provide additional voluntary benefit plans. The JCC has a 401(K) plan with 50% match of employee contributions up to 3%, on a 5-year vesting schedule. Paid Time Off starts day one and accrues based on years of service; first-year employees may accrue up to 120 hours. Benefits include paid holidays, up to 4 floating holidays per year (prorated), and flexible PTO after 2 years. Employee discounts include up to 50% off JCC Preschool and Summer Camp, tickets to Mizel Arts and Culture events, and other program discounts. Full-time employees receive a complimentary family gym membership. Employees also have access to the JCCs of North America (JCCA) resources and educational stipends where eligible.
