Overview
Tax Senior, State and Local Tax - Unclaimed Property, applies industry knowledge and experience to clients by advising on tax implications and other accounting matters that affect their business objectives, with emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This role uses tax and/or accounting skills in a consultative capacity, where sporadic data sets are obtained, analyzed and modeled. The position involves project management, client and state presentations, coordinating compliance, audit defense and VDAs, managing client expectations and deliverables, and collaborating with leadership on marketing, networking and business development. The role also provides SALT expertise in collaboration with Core Tax and Audit Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers.
Job Duties
Research: Identifies complex situations requiring research, outlines issues and sources, analyzes facts, and prepares detailed reports of findings.
Relationship building: Develops relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax/Department of Revenue personnel and other state agencies.
Unclaimed Property Compliance: Obtains and manipulates client data for annual escheat returns; uses FSI Track, BDO Global Portal and other systems for data gathering; imports data into FSI Track; identifies exemptions/deferrals; performs data reconciliations; responds to state notices; assists with due diligence and client payment processing; provides exam support and communicates with clients and UP team members.
Unclaimed Property Consulting: Drafts memorandums and opinions, supports escheat planning, develops policies and procedures, represents clients in audits and voluntary disclosures, identifies gift card planning opportunities, coordinates client interviews and onsite visits, prepares data for escheat analysis, develops exposure quantification models, and supports consultative selling strategies.
Engagement Management: Manages engagements, project manages multiple clients and projects, updates CRM entries, and maintains client expectations.
Software & Data: Utilizes FSI Track, tax research databases and GL systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards); remains knowledgeable about technology enhancements for the unclaimed property group.
Software
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); experience with Power BI, Alteryx and other software is preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise the day-to-day workload of SALT Experienced Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and review work product.
Ensure training on relevant software; assist in performance evaluations and development goals; deliver periodic performance feedback.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance, required.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Two (2) or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing or forensic accounting in public accounting or a corporate setting, required.
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted in the U.S.) or EA, or equivalent, preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical and research abilities; solid organizational skills with attention to detail; ability to multi-task in a deadline-driven environment.
Experience managing a team of tax professionals and delegating work; ability to build relationships with internal and client personnel; executive presence as primary client contact.
Advanced knowledge of tax standards, sources of information used in tax filings, and understanding of taxable conditions for clients.
Other Details
Salary ranges: National $73,500 - $131,250; Maryland, NYC/Long Island/Westchester, Washington DC ranges similarly.
