Overview
Tax Senior, State and Local Tax - Unclaimed Property at BDO USA. The Tax Senior applies industry knowledge and experience to clients by advising on tax implications and other accounting matters, with an emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This role uses tax and/or accounting skills in a consultative capacity, handling sporadic data sets, and involves project management, client and state presentations, coordinating compliance, audit defense and other consulting engagements. In this role, you will work with leadership to recommend actions, identify methods of complying with unclaimed property statutes and regulations, manage client expectations and deliverables, and collaborate with Core Tax and Audit Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise. Research: Identifies complex situations requiring research; outlines issues and sources; analyzes facts and research sources; develops relationships with in-state and out-of-state DOT/DOR personnel, Department of Treasury, etc. Unclaimed Property Compliance: Obtains and manipulates client data for annual escheat returns; uses FSI Track, BDO Global Portal and other systems for data gathering; imports data; identifies exemptions/deferrals; performs reconciliations; composes responses to state notices; assists with due diligence letter processing and client payment processing; provides exam support and communicates with clients and UP team members. Unclaimed Property Consulting: Drafts memorandums, opinions and documentation on escheat issues; participates in escheat planning processes; develops policies and procedures; represents clients in unclaimed property audits and voluntary disclosures; identifies gift card planning opportunities; coordinates client interviews, onsite visits and workplans; compiles general ledger detail for escheat items; prepares and reviews data for analysis; assists with remediation and exposure quantification; supports client refunds and consultative selling strategies; maintains CRM entries. Unclaimed Property Related Software: Utilizes FSI Track, tax research databases and other software; maintains working knowledge of GL systems (SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, AS/400, Epicor, etc.); participates in technology enhancements for the unclaimed property group. Supervisory Responsibilities: May supervise daily workload of SALT Experienced Associates and Associates; ensures training on relevant software; may evaluate performance and assist in goal development; delivers periodic performance feedback and evaluations. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance, required. Two (2) or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing or forensic accounting in public accounting or in-house organization, required. CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction) or Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word); Power BI, Alteryx and other software preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication; strong analytical and research skills; solid organizational skills; ability to multi-task; deadline-driven; capable of managing a team and delegating work; ability to build relationships with internal and client personnel; executive presence; ability to interact with professionals at all levels; advanced knowledge of tax standards and relevant information sources. Other Information
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. National Range: $73,500 - $131,250; Maryland/NYC/Westchester/Washington DC ranges included.
