Job Duties / Responsibilities This position is within the company’s casualty litigation section and provides legal support to the business units of a major public utility located in Louisiana. The successful candidate will handle a broad range of property and/or litigation matters in various venues around the state, with emphasis on property disputes, right-of-way disputes, and condemnation/expropriation cases. The candidate will manage their own docket, individually or as part of a litigation team. Outside counsel involvement is limited to expropriation/condemnation matters. The daily work schedule may occasionally exceed ordinary business hours. The position requires working in person from the employer's office in New Orleans, with attendance at in-person meetings, conferences, hearings, court appearances, mediations/arbitrations, and trials. Some travel may be required, and attendance at industry/company functions is expected. The candidate should be comfortable interacting with senior management and company executives.

Job Qualifications

A Juris Doctorate, current license to practice law in the State of Louisiana, and solid litigation experience are required.

Job Experience Required

Senior Counsel: 7+ years in a law firm or in-house handling condemnation/expropriation matters.

Preferred Experience:

7 – 15 years’ experience in a defense firm, or in-house in Commercial, Property, and Expropriation Litigation

Solid trial experience with the ability to try a case as first chair

Graduation from an accredited law school; membership in good standing of the Louisiana Bar; and 7-15 years’ litigation experience in state and federal courts

Extensive commercial litigation experience with the ability to independently manage a docket with minimal supervision

Drafting of Answers, Third-Party Demands, Cross Claims; discovery; taking and defending depositions; motion practice; Pre-Trial Orders; and preparations for mediations/arbitrations, judge and jury trials, and appeals

Other Preferred Attributes

Ability to work across disciplines; willingness to work in-person regularly, attend meetings, and travel as needed

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, solid work ethic, and demonstrated success in prior employment

Corporate defense experience in a regionally or nationally recognized law firm or public utility
