Job Summary The Arizona Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is hiring an attorney with litigation experience and a background in environmental and water law to join the Environmental Protection Unit in the Civil Division as a Special Assistant Attorney General – Litigation Director. The Litigation Director will work under the direction of the Chief of the Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) and will supervise litigation matters, provide guidance to Unit attorneys, and participate in performance evaluations. This position is sponsored annually by Arizona State University School of Law (ASU Law) with expectation of renewal upon satisfactory evaluations and continued funding.

Requirements
J.D. from ABA-accredited law school
Admitted to practice in Arizona and in good standing
Demonstrable litigation experience in federal or state civil court; experience with teams of junior attorneys and support staff
Experience supervising attorneys and staff and directing litigation strategy
Experience working on environmental, natural resource, and/or climate change matters
Willingness to live and work in Arizona
Desired Background
5+ years of professional experience as a practicing attorney, preferably with three years in civil jury trial litigation
Ability to work in small teams
Strong legal writing ability and attention to detail
Self-starter, deadline-driven, and passionate about environmental issues
This position is funded by ASU Law, which will pay the salary of the Fellow and provide employee benefits. Salary is based on experience and qualifications. The annual salary range is $120,000 to $133,000 (DOE).
Remote Work
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon department needs and performance.
Job Duties
Provide legal representation including advice and representation in complex cases in State and Federal court.
Prepare legal documents (briefs, pleadings, memoranda).
Investigate, review documents, conduct legal research, discovery, and case analysis for trial; appear in court.
Supervise the litigation work of junior attorneys, review/approve analysis and strategy, assist in settlement negotiations, and obtain executive approval for case initiation and resolution decisions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of applicable statutes, case law, and court rules
Knowledge of legal techniques and proper document preparation formats
Understanding litigation decision factors, including opposing counsel strategies and judicial perspectives
Experience in civil litigation jury trial practice and complex litigation
Knowledge of ethical standards for lawyers and public employees
Skills
Persuasive oral and written communication throughout litigation and appeals
Efficient preparation of legal documents, memoranda, and correspondence
Knowledge of all phases of a civil case, including trial and settlement negotiation
Strong interpersonal skills for interactions with court personnel, agency personnel, victims, and government agencies
Abilities
Identify issues, analyze and articulate legal arguments; assess evidence; communicate with colleagues and executives
Plan, organize, direct and monitor complex investigations/cases
Apply analytical and problem-solving methods to systems and programs
Supervise litigation decisions and mentor junior attorneys; encourage teamwork
Manage high-exposure cases and utilize subordinate staff effectively
Display courteous and professional behavior; apply professional ethics; exercise good judgment in strategic decisions
