Overview
Experienced Tax Manager, Non Profit at BDO USA. The Non Profit Experienced Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and serving as the primary client contact for complex non-profit tax issues. Applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption and unrelated business income issues, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. Plays a critical role on the regional nonprofit tax team and participates in marketing, networking, and maintaining client relationships as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Responsibilities
Tax Compliance: ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual are followed.
Review of tax returns and issues with clients; involve specialists where appropriate.
Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues; consult with client and/or partner as appropriate.
Review ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements.
Tax Process Planning: budgeting and staffing; monitor engagement process and time vs. budget with Senior; timely billing and collection of A/R; manage client relationships; provide timely advice to clients.
Research: identify when research is needed; frame issues; report analysis; apply firm standards for WTA and tax return preparation; involve firm specialists as appropriate.
Tax Consulting: develop and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits by reducing taxes; apply tax knowledge and business/industry understanding to recommend solutions; manage workloads and delegate effectively; act as a technical resource; handle inquiries from federal/state agencies.
Strategy Development: develop new ideas to reduce taxes/expenses and improve client position; review tax implications; research and implement nonprofit tax strategies; leverage lessons learned from prior projects to improve processes.
Supervisory Responsibilities: supervise associates and senior associates; review their work; train on software tools; act as a Career Advisor; manage workload and provide performance feedback.
Education/Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (Accounting/Finance/Economics/Statistics preferred); Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Experience: six (6) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting; prior supervisory experience required.
Licenses/Certifications: CPA, Attorney (active in U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) required; other related certifications preferred.
Software: proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred.
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: strong verbal and written communication; effective delegation; strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision-making; ability to work in a team; ability to lead a tax professionals team; capable of developing and maintaining client relationships; executive presence for primary client contact.
