Overview County of San Diego, Planning & Development Services (PDS) is accepting applications for Building Inspector II. This position is assigned to PDS. Interviews will take place the week of December 15, 2025. Job offers for selected candidates will be made the week of December 29, 2025. Future salary increases are planned (June 2026 and June 2027).

The Position The duties of the Building Inspector II consist of performing inspections of residential dwellings, commercial, and industrial buildings for conformance with building construction, zoning and grading codes, and approved building and land use permits. The position is located at the County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa. The Operations Center includes 18 structures and houses 19 departments, including an employee gym/workout center.

Hiring Process and Timeline

Job Offer and Background Process begins after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.

Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid Residential Combination Inspector certificate or equivalent at the time of application; OR

A valid Residential Building Inspector certificate, or equivalent and any two (2) of the following: Residential Electrical Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector, or Residential Mechanical Inspector or equivalent at the time of application; OR

A valid CALBO Field Inspector credential at the time of application.

AND

Any one of the following certifications or equivalent at the time of application:

Commercial Combination Inspector

Commercial Building Inspector

Commercial Electrical Inspector

Commercial Mechanical Inspector

Commercial Plumbing Inspector

Building Plans Examiner

Certified Building Code Official

One (1) year of experience as a Building Inspector I with the County of San Diego; OR

Two (2) years of post-certification experience as a building inspector for a public agency responsible for enforcing municipal, county and state building and construction codes and land-use, zoning and grading regulations.

Notes:

Certificates must be issued by organizations such as the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), the International Code Council (ICC), or an equivalent nationally recognized certification entity. Certifications may be substituted if determined to be applicable. Pursuant to California Health and Safety Code, construction inspectors, plans examiners and building officials employed by the County must meet certification requirements and continuing education requirements.

Evaluation & Selection The most highly qualified candidates, based on evaluation results, will be referred for an interview. Be sure to include your experience in meeting the minimum requirements in both the Work Experience section and the Supplemental Questionnaire section of the Application. The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month eligible list based on scores from the evaluation of information in the employment and supplemental application.
