Harris’ Environmental, Engineering and Consulting Division does industry-leading work in environmental planning and compliance, community planning and housing solutions, engineering design, municipal and district finance, and one water solutions. The Senior Archaeologist leads cultural resources field work and analysis, prepares technical documentation and reports, and coordinates project teams and schedules in support of environmental services.

Responsibilities

Conduct field work related to cultural resources and lead teams conducting pedestrian surveys, limited shovel test pits, and cultural monitoring.

Experience with cultural resources monitoring and compliance on construction projects.

Lead the preparation of, or assist in managing staff in preparing large, complex cultural resources documents such as Cultural Resources Technical Reports and other regulatory documents; act as primary author or senior reviewer.

Manage tasks related to cultural resources, CEQA, and NEPA, including work prepared by in-house staff and sub-consultants.

Manage projects with all aspects of cultural analyses and develop mitigation strategies and other project solutions.

Conduct archival and record searches and coordinate Native American consultations as required (Senate Bill 18 and Assembly Bill 52).

Assist in recruiting, hiring, skill development, and mentoring cultural resources staff.

Apply cultural resources expertise to environmental analyses, special studies, regulatory permitting, surveys, and monitoring.

Provide mentorship to junior and mid-level staff and serve as a primary point of contact for clients and resource agencies on projects.

Develop work breakdown structures and manage large-scale field efforts with stringent schedules and permit compliance.

Perform project management duties including forecasting, tracking, invoicing, progress reports, and scheduling.

Review contracts to understand scope, fee, schedule, deliverables, and obligations; monitor costs and changes and take corrective actions as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, historic architecture, or related field.

Must be a Registered Professional Archaeologist.

Minimum of 10–12 years of related work experience.

8 years of CEQA experience and cultural resources documentation.

Experience in managing complex projects and leading field survey efforts of all sizes.

Data management experience, including electronic data collection in the field and managing large data sets.

Solid understanding of CEQA, NEPA, and other permitting requirements related to cultural resources protections.

Strong relationships with key clients and agency staff.

Ability to work in a high-paced environment with changing priorities and to support multiple projects.

Mentoring and career development interest for junior and mid-level staff.

Work Environment & Travel

Capable of working in all climates, enduring temperature extremes for long hours, and performing strenuous physical activity (e.g., hiking for hours during surveys).

Some travel may be required.

Compensation & Benefits The annual salary range offered for this position is 100,000–165,000. Actual pay offered will be dependent on experience and expertise. We offer competitive salaries and benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
