Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Department - Full Time - Hartford, CT

Connecticut Children's Overview Completes thorough but appropriately focused evaluations of pediatric patients (from neonates to adolescents and young adults), including competent and age appropriate histories and examinations. Identifies level of illness severity in a timely manner. Presents thoughtful assessments to the supervising physician and works towards prescribing necessary care plans. Performs appropriate procedures under their responsibility with the appropriate guidance. Knows when and how to seek assistance. Responsibilities
Medical knowledge: With guidance, applies basic medical knowledge to common diagnoses in the department. Expands clinical knowledge by asking insightful questions, seeking knowledge independently and reading medical literature critically. Incorporates issues of child health advocacy, preventive health care, ethical dilemmas, and cost of tests and therapies. Diagnostic evaluation: Provides basic evaluation (e.g., diagnostic testing and consultation) for common diagnoses. Increases evaluation based on an unfocused differential diagnosis. Reports results of diagnostic studies, identifying clinically significant results with guidance. Patient history: Gathers patient information following a template and adapts it with guidance to filter and prioritize pertinent positives and negatives based on broad diagnostic categories or possible diagnoses. Patient care: Clinical reasoning presents clinical facts to the preceptor, supervising physician, and care team. Completes assigned patient care responsibilities focused on individual patients. Participates in the creation of patient management plans and discusses plans with patients/families. Procedures: Increasingly exposed to core procedures and guided in their performance (reference the APP Procedures Listing for relevant specialties). Interpersonal and communication: Establishes rapport with patients/families, participates in inter-professional team communication, and records information in the patient record accurately and timely. Seeks guidance on the best mode of communication when uncertain. Practice-based learning and improvement: Develops clinical questions, accesses available evidence with guidance, and participates in feedback sessions to develop professional goals and a learning plan. Professionalism: Performs responsibilities thoroughly and timely; promotes a healthy and productive team environment and utilizes resources to support well-being. System-based practice: Coordinates care in routine clinical situations and engages the inter-professional team based on patient and family needs. Applies awareness of population and community health needs and disparities in understanding patient/family concerns. Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Required
Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner: Graduate degree in nursing (accredited by a national certifying body) or equivalent credentials prior to December 31, 2004 as recognized by a national certifying body. Physician Assistant: Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited PA program at the time of graduation. No related experience required. License and/or Certification
Current Connecticut APRN licensure (if APN path) or NCCPA-certified and Connecticut PA licensure (if PA path). Based on privileges, Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required. Federal DEA and CT controlled substance registrations may be required.
