Barnes-Jewish Hospital The Surg Tech Extern will commit to a PRN schedule working 2 shifts every 6 weeks. Hours vary and may include day and night shifts, weekends and holidays during the Externship. Orientation will be mandatory to start on a certain day (will discuss) Valid BLS/CPR certification through the externship Enrollment in an accredited Surg Tech program and completed 1st two semesters, starting their 3rd semester or beyond. Role Purpose
Assists mentor with surgical duties for operating room procedures under the direct supervision of a registered nurse and/or surgical technologist. Responsibilities
Assists in turning over of room, and ensures supplies, instruments, and equipment are returned to proper location. Assists with preparing operating room for surgical patient, reviews preference cards to determine surgeon needs, obtains the necessary supplies and equipment for the procedure, ensures cleanliness of room and assists with opening of sterile supplies under the supervision of assigned mentor. Assists with surgical scrub duties, and with the collection, identification and disposition of cultures and specimens under supervision of assigned mentor. Participates in educational activities related to extern program including unit specific educational information. BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job. Minimum Requirements
Enrolled in an accredited Surg Tech program High School Diploma or GED Preferred Requirements
