Job summary and program details are provided to describe the Respiratory Student Extern who will provide respiratory care under supervision in an accredited program. The externship is open to students in a senior year of an approved respiratory care baccalaureate or associate degree program. Responsibilities
The Extern will receive competency assessments until the assigned preceptor determines the trainee competent to perform specific respiratory care functions independently and in accordance with safe practice and patient care standards of UT Southwestern Medical Center. Perform routine respiratory care activities, including aerosol therapy, MDI, DPI, airway clearance, lung expansion therapy, oxygen therapy, non-invasive ventilation, patient education, and setup/operation of equipment for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. Report any changes in patient condition or behavior to the assigned preceptor, respiratory campus supervisor, or assistant manager. Request guidance as needed to ensure safe, high-quality, and effective patient care at all times. Respond to patient requests for assistance in a respectful, positive, and timely manner. Document patient information accurately and promptly. Maintain accountability for actions in the workplace and report errors promptly. Maintain patient confidentiality when asked by visitors or the public. Coordinate schedules to seek learning opportunities and demonstrate knowledge. Utilize downtime to assist respiratory therapists and medical staff in patient care. Performs other duties as requested. Qualifications
Required
Education Transcript (most recent unofficial) with a 3.0 GPA and a letter of recommendation from a clinical instructor, plus completed online application. Experience Resume showing all work experience, involvement in professional organizations, and volunteer history. Licenses and Certifications (BLS) Basic Life Support course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC). Preferred
