Primary Purpose Testing and Commissioning engineers are a front-line field engineering force that commissions, maintains, and troubleshoots transmission and distribution level protection and control systems inside ComEd substations. System and equipment types include protective relays, SCADA, substation automation, power and control equipment, fiber-optic, power line carrier, and revenue metering. The Testing and Commissioning engineers perform field testing and commissioning activities for installation of new equipment, along with troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance of existing equipment. They create commissioning plans, write livening procedures, create and run test plans, and analyze test results. They troubleshoot and perform field investigations for malfunctioning power equipment, system events and protective relaying misoperations, support corrective maintenance, and perform preventive maintenance on protection system components and SCADA. Position may require extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies. Primary Duties The Testing and Commissioning engineers are the technical authority in the field. They provide leadership by directing and supporting substation maintenance and contractor crews, and continually interface with ComEd’s Central T&S Engineering, Work Management, Project Management, Operations, Data Maintenance, and Substation Maintenance departments to support T&S daily work activities. They play a critical role in substation outage/work planning, maintain engineering drawings, relay/SCADA database management, and support NERC/CIP audit activities and maintenance programs. The role emphasizes hands-on field work, troubleshooting, and learning with access to company resources and potential overtime. Job Scope Influences project decisions having a significant impact on the company, including leading employees or contractors in the commissioning of electrical systems and equipment. Applies technical knowledge to promote a safe work environment and enhance customer satisfaction. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Professional Engineer license. Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices. Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems. Knowledge and ability to apply problem-solving approaches and engineering theory. Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes, methods, and practices relevant to the area of expertise. 7+ years of professional engineering experience. Thorough knowledge and experience in related areas of engineering. Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to identify and resolve complex issues. Minimum of three related career experiences or equivalent credentials (e.g., lead participation in industry committee, PE license, advanced degree, or project management certification). Note: Experience reductions may apply for a masters degree, PE license, or other credentials as specified by policy. Preferred Qualifications Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate with all management levels. Strong written and oral communication skills. Technical experience related to electrical power equipment and electrical troubleshooting. Demonstrated team leadership on critical projects.
