Overview The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of engineering regulations, codes, standards, and advanced principles, enabling them to handle complex or unique assignments within a specific discipline, installation, or service area.

Responsibilities

Support capital program projects such as DSP, TSP, SUB IR, DSERP, etc.

Gather and evaluate data for transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution systems, including transformer test data, generator specifications, and line information.

Model systems using tools like CAPE to perform short circuit and protection coordination studies, including developing relay settings and preparing protection summaries.

Ensure WECC and NERC PRC compliance in all relay setting activities.

Issue substation relay and field auto-recloser settings (SEL, ABB, Electromechanical) via ASPEN relay database.

Support test technicians during relay commissioning; review and approve returned “as-left” setting files and revise settings as needed.

Conduct system studies to determine protection requirements for design.

Provide ongoing technical support to Test Technicians and Operators.

Travel to the field as required for job walks, testing, and commissioning.

Longer-Term Expectations

Provide QA/QC support on protection deliverables, including setting files, logic, calculations, and electronic documentation.

Design protective relaying systems to ensure safety and reliability by reviewing AC/DC/logic schematics.

Review and approve one-line diagrams, logic drawings, and coordinate with Substation Engineers.

Support projects involving sub-transmission and distribution substation expansion, substation automation, and infrastructure replacement.

Required Skills & Attributes

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.

04+ years of engineering experience in Protection, Substation, and/or Distribution systems within the electric utility industry.

Proven ability to: Develop and peer-review relay settings (12kV to 765kV); Design step-distance and pilot protection schemes (44–100kV).

Deep knowledge of: System One-Line Diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and relay logic diagrams.

Proficiency in: Relay setting software (SEL AcSELerator, Client EnerVista UR Setup); Understanding of NERC PRC standards (PRC-23, PRC-26, PRC-27).

Experience in: Symmetrical component analysis; Fault current calculations; Setting electromechanical, SEL, and microprocessor-based relays.

Desired Skills & Attributes

Experience developing logic diagrams, programming relay settings, and preparing setting documents to support field commissioning for capacitor/reactor banks.

Familiarity with auto-recloser and fuse coordination for distribution systems.

Strong capabilities in project planning and resource management; decision-making and results delivery; staying current with industry innovations and technologies.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
