Job Summary
The Senior Controls Engineer, reporting to the Senior Electrical Engineering Manager, is a technical leader responsible for the full lifecycle of electrical control systems in industrial air pollution control, energy recovery, and wastewater treatment projects. This role includes concept design, PLC/HMI/VFD programming, network architecture development, documentation, and commissioning support to on-site field service engineers. The engineer is expected to demonstrate in-depth expertise with Siemens TIA Portal and Rockwell platforms. This position regularly collaborates with project managers, project engineers, operations, panel fabricators, customers, and cross-functional teams to ensure successful system execution.
Responsibilities
The Senior Controls Engineer will be expected to perform:
Design, develop, and debug PLC, HMI, and VFD programs using Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, and FactoryTalk View Create and validate control logic, alarms, safety interlocks, and sequence of operations for complex industrial systems Design and implement control network topologies (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP/IP) Read, develop, and revise electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, AutoCAD Electrical; ensure compliance with UL508A and NFPA 70/79/86 standards Coordinate closely with panel fabricators and vendors to ensure accurate builds Provide mentorship, training, and peer reviews for junior Controls Engineers; foster professional development through technical guidance and code reviews Collaborate with Applications Engineering during project kickoff to confirm design intent and review technical risks or non-standard scope items Interface directly with Field Service Engineers and customers during FAT, commissioning, SAT, or service calls; provide technical support, clarify design intent, and resolve integration challenges Occasional travel to customer job sites to perform Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), final commissioning, and field troubleshooting; resolve wiring, programming, and instrumentation issues in real time Maintain accurate documentation, including revision-controlled code, site reports, test results, and customer communications Contribute to the development and enforcement of company programming standards, reusable logic templates, and process improvements Support the continuous improvement of internal engineering workflows, including task automation, documentation quality, and lessons learned capture Consistently demonstrate and uphold the company’s four core values through actions, decisions, and interactions Foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative environment that supports learning and teamwork Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned to support efficient use of company resources and ensure customer satisfaction
Skills & Qualifications
Required Demonstrated mastery of Siemens TIA Portal and Rockwell Studio 5000 environments for PLC/HMI/VFD programming Demonstrated expertise in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and commissioning support across diverse environments Proficiency with developing and commissioning industrial Ethernet-based control networks Experience with AutoCAD Electrical for reviewing and modifying schematics and panel layouts Effective communicator with strong organizational and time management skills Ability to independently lead control projects from design to commissioning Ability to work flexible and irregular hours that may vary due to customer needs and may include day, evening, weekends and holidays as project calendar or deadlines dictate Preferred Experience with virtual machine environments (VMWare/VM Workstation) Background in industrial air pollution control, thermal oxidizers, energy recovery, burners, electric heaters, or water treatment systems Experience with custom-engineered capital equipment Familiarity with change management/version control tools and structured programming methodologies Familiarity with NFPA85: Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code, NFPA86: Standard for Ovens and Furnaces, and FM Global Data Sheet 6-11: Thermal and Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizers
Education & Experience
Required Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field Five (5) to ten (10) years of hands-on experience in control systems designing, programming, and commissioning industrial control systems Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and ERP systems
