Overview Automation Engineer

at Marmon Industrial Energy & Infrastructure (MIEI) – East Granby, CT. The Automation Engineer will develop and execute approved projects on the site’s Technology Roadmap to drive Industry 4.0 practices across the shop floor. This role will lead project management of new projects and provide troubleshooting support for existing processes from an automation perspective, covering control systems, PLC programming, and data acquisition. The ideal candidate will have a passion for technology improvements, Industry 4.0, automation and/or robotics to support safety, quality and productivity goals.

Responsibilities

Troubleshoot existing automation controls across multiple process lines, PLC programming, and integrate required equipment into production.

Identify opportunities for future projects focused on Industry 4.0 adaptation, new production requirements, and quality improvements.

Own the development of a strategic Technology Roadmap for future projects at the site.

Project management and implementation of automation/improvement projects; collaborate with the Group Automation Manager, site engineers, and IT (as needed) to execute automation projects and ensure secure plant network integration.

Perform process analysis and data analytics to improve manufacturing processes for cost reduction, quality improvement, and efficiency.

Develop and maintain data collection systems for production equipment.

Implement inventory/work tracking and management solutions.

Prepare and present multi-year technology strategy plans for process improvement, new product development, and quality improvements; execute approved projects.

Prepare monthly reports to senior management on status, results, and effectiveness of active projects.

Support corrective action teams to determine root causes of quality, material, and processing issues and implement long-term corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Coordinate and provide training on software/network systems to engineering, maintenance and production teams.

Be available for on-call/off-hours support if problems arise.

Provide PLC and HMI programming support for production equipment.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field.

Experience with automation equipment and integration into existing processes.

Demonstrated technical capacity, critical thinking, and production environment support.

Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to create concise and informative presentations.

Strong engineering design, project management, and analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Lean Six Sigma training/experience/certification.

Ability to apply critical thought processes to engineer, design, develop, recommend, and implement strategies to meet plant and corporate objectives.

Demonstrated leadership and ability to influence across non-reporting relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively to oversee, direct and motivate teams and other plant personnel as needed.

Ability to travel for training purposes, to other plants, and/or to corporate offices.

Ability to assess ROI on automation projects using OEE, scrap, downtime, and other metrics.

Experience managing and directing third-party integrators to ensure project deliverables meet site needs.

Proficiency in Allen-Bradley PLC/HMI platforms, with experience in Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, and Profinet networking protocols.

Working Conditions And/or Physical Requirements

Ability to work long hours in a sedentary position (sitting, looking at a computer, charts/graphs, and performing repetitive motions).

Ability to move objects and materials up to 25 lbs.

Ability to collaborate with manufacturing team members in an environment that can be noisy.

Ability to follow safety guidelines and wear required PPE onsite.
