Overview
Integra Design Group is a full-service, multidisciplinary design firm with over 140 employees and operations across the Southeastern United States, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer (PE) to join our Charlotte, NC office. This leadership position plays a critical role in the mechanical design and coordination of complex, multidisciplinary building projects for commercial, institutional, and governmental clients.
Position Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for performing, supervising, and directing all aspects of mechanical engineering, including HVAC, hydronic piping, plumbing, fire protection and energy systems. This role involves leading mechanical engineering efforts from conceptual design through construction administration, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, and integration with other disciplines. You will act as a technical leader, mentor junior staff, support business development, and serve as a trusted representative of the firm to clients, contractors, and external stakeholders. Salary dependent on experience.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design Leadership
Lead the design and documentation of mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and energy analysis for commercial and government facilities.
Develop conceptual studies, load calculations, system selection, equipment layouts, energy modeling, and sustainable design strategies.
Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, and other disciplines to ensure fully integrated designs.
Prepare code-compliant construction drawings and specifications for all design phases: schematic, design development, and construction documents.
Develop and oversee control diagrams, P&IDs, and sequences of operation.
Conduct quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews on all project deliverables.
Project Management & Oversight
Serve as Design Manager and/or Project Manager on select assignments.
Participate in project scope development, proposal preparation, budget planning, and scheduling.
Manage internal and external project resources to ensure timely, on-budget, high-quality delivery.
Coordinate construction phase services, including site visits, RFIs, submittal reviews, punch lists, and as-built documentation.
Participate in commissioning coordination, ensuring system performance meets design intent.
Mentorship & Team Development
Supervise and mentor engineers, designers, and technicians; foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
Lead internal training initiatives and provide regular feedback on performance.
Assist with annual staff evaluations and support the Practice Leader in developing and refining best practices.
Client & Industry Engagement
Attend client meetings to define scopes, review designs, and present project updates.
Maintain and grow strong client relationships through effective communication and service excellence.
Support marketing and business development efforts by participating in proposals and interviews.
Represent Integra at professional organizations and industry events.
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Architectural Engineering (with mechanical focus) from an ABET-accredited program.
Licenses & Certifications:
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in at least one U.S. state; NCEES registration and ability to obtain licensure in other jurisdictions preferred.
LEED Accredited Professional is a plus.
Additional certifications desirable:
Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP)
High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP)
Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD)
ASHRAE specialty certifications
Construction Document Technologist CDT, CCS, or CCCA
Experience:
Minimum of
10 years
of progressively responsible mechanical design experience in a leadership role at an A/E or consulting engineering firm.
Strong familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and sustainable design best practices.
Experience with federal, municipal, commercial, higher education, healthcare, and/or laboratory facilities preferred.
Experience with various project delivery methods, including Design-Build and CM-at-Risk.
Familiarity with energy modeling and commissioning is a plus.
Technical & Software Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Bluebeam.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit; understanding of BIM processes highly preferred.
Familiarity with energy modeling tools, load calculation software, and specification writing platforms.
Soft Skills & Competencies:
Strong leadership, mentorship, and team-building abilities.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proven problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Client-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional service.
Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Requirements:
Domestic travel may be required for project site visits, client meetings, and team coordination.
