Senior CNC Machinist and Machine Shop Lead
Senior CNC Machinist and Machine Shop Lead with advanced experience in 5-axis milling, CNC turning, and FeatureCAM programming to run the NRL machine shop and lead a team of skilled machinists. The role involves hands-on machining operations while managing schedules, budgets, quality, and workflow for mission-critical hardware supporting spaceflight and aerospace programs.

Key Responsibilities
Lead daily operations of the machine shop, including scheduling, work assignments, and quality control.
Program, set up, and operate CNC mills (including 5-axis) and CNC lathes to produce high-tolerance aerospace components.
Develop complex CNC programs using FeatureCAM and optimize tool paths for efficiency and precision.
Select tooling, fixtures, and machining parameters to meet material requirements and tolerances.
Read and interpret aerospace engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T callouts.
Inspect hardware using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments.
Troubleshoot machining and programming issues, implementing corrective actions.
Ensure compliance with ISO, AS9100, and aerospace manufacturing standards.
Maintain and oversee preventive maintenance schedules for all shop equipment.
Mentor and train machinists in advanced CNC programming and machining techniques.
Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to resolve manufacturing issues.
Work Environment
Location: On-site
Travel Requirements: Minimal 20%
Working Hours: Standard
Compensation Basic Compensation:
$95,300 - $143,000 USD annually
The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; technical trade school or associate degree in manufacturing technology preferred.
10+ years CNC machining experience, with at least 3 years in a lead or supervisory role.
Advanced proficiency in FeatureCAM programming for both milling and turning.
Expertise in 5-axis milling and CNC lathe operations.
Deep understanding of aerospace-grade materials (aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, Inconel, composites).
Strong GD&T interpretation skills.
Experience with precision measurement equipment and CMM operation.
Ability to lift 40 lbs and stand for extended periods.
Desired Qualifications
Security Clearance: Secret or higher
Aerospace or space industry manufacturing background.
AS9100 quality system knowledge.
Lead Lean manufacturing, 5S, and process improvement initiatives.
