Overview

Position: Principal Engineer, Tooling at ICU Medical. The role leads the execution of plastic components strategies and initiatives for ICU Medical Device products. Strategies will be defined by the Operations team with inputs from stakeholders. Stakeholders include: PMOs, R&D, Operations, Procurement, and Supplier Quality. This position will lead the execution of tooling, equipment, and manufacturing processes relative to plastics. Represents the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) business unit on projects and provides expert analysis and advice regarding manufacturing processes to senior management. Responsibilities

Provide expert technical guidance and support to R&D in the design and implementation of high quality new products and processes, through Reverse Engineering, DFM, DFA, Mold Flow, Dimensional analysis, DOE, and other problem solving tools. Collaborate with R&D Materials Engineering to ensure production materials are producible, high quality, common, and cost effective. Develop and lead the implementation of best practices established by industry and the AME team. Develop and implement AME practices, optimizing solutions by considering the effect of any change to a part, or on other parts or assemblies regarding tooling, process or assembly. Understand design concepts of the final product, coach other engineering disciplines and help update design standards and best practices through the design cycle. Evaluate existing tooling and processes; identify obsolescence, need for repair, refurbishment, or replacement. Distinguish between tooling/process issues and supplier competency. Analyze and execute make-vs-buy decisions and determine the most appropriate use of human and capital resources. Implement high quality validated tools, equipment, and processes at suppliers and in operations facilities. Create and lead best practices for TMV, FAT, IQ, OQ, and assist PML through the PQ process at both component and assembly levels. Longer-term expectations

Partner with Procurement, Supplier Quality Engineering, Sustaining Engineering, and suppliers on supply and quality issues. Ensure designs, manufacturing, validation, and PM plans align with internal requirements and regulations. Implement initiatives and cost savings as defined by leadership. Lead multiple teams to navigate hurdles, achieve performance, incorporate cross-functional input, and address problems holistically. Lead road maps for core processes and process controls across various businesses. Lead DFM/DFA, Mold Design, Process Development, PM plans with R&D, Suppliers, and Operations. Represent AME supporting Procurement, SE, Procurement Operations on tooling, plastic, and process issues at suppliers and PML. Drive excellence in Design, Manufacturing, and Operations Processes. Keep skills up to date through training, tech shows, and publications related to Tooling, Molding, and Automation (CAD, Mold Flow, Scan Analysis, Reverse Engineering, Statistical Tools). Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

10+ years of Mold Tooling and/or Plastics Processing Technology experience with hands-on involvement in successful launches of plastic injection molded components for mechanical assemblies. Successful track record of implementing new designs and/or design changes across design, test, manufacturing start-up, and launch. In-depth knowledge of Quality Systems, DFA/DFM, MSD concepts, PFMEA. Proficient in CAD, Mold Flow, and Scientific Molding related to engineered plastics. Proficient in core office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook). Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written). Proven ability to lead multiple programs and mentor teams through tooling and processing problem-solving. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills; able to lead multiple complex cross-functional teams. Education and Experience

Journeyman Mold Maker or Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 10+ years of hands-on experience leading plastics and tooling projects. Well-rounded in Plastic Tooling, Plastic Processing, and Manufacturing Engineering. Plastics Injection Mold Design, Plastic Simulation, and Assembly Automation are a plus. Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age. 10+ years of Mold Tooling/Plastics Processing experience with hands-on launching of plastic injection molded components for mechanical assemblies. Remote position; preference for candidates in the Connecticut (CT) region. Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Work is performed in a clean room environment. May be required to sit or stand for long periods. Must be able to use computer or touchscreen to enter work order data. Occasionally lift objects up to 25 lbs. Typically requires travel 20 to 50% of the time. About Us
