Overview
The Telecommunications Technician 2 will work in a modular construction facility, prefabricating electrical module cabling, communication spaces, pre-terminating cables, pathways, and equipment. The Technician 2 is responsible for planning, layout, and the complete installation of new commercial and retrofit communications equipment and systems, following all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Extensive experience with the installation, termination, and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments is required. Experience with Data Centers, Hospitals, or Airports is a plus.
Responsibilities
Install video and data cables using Cat 5E, Cat 6, and fiber optic cables.
Terminate and test horizontal copper cables (Cat 5, Cat 6).
Terminate fiber optic cables.
Terminate riser cables.
Install patch panels.
Label and test horizontal cables.
Install backbone and riser cables (copper & fiber).
Install interior conduit, Panduit, and Wiremold.
Read and interpret plans and specifications.
Install plywood and racks.
Install cable trays in TC, MDF, IDF rooms.
Mentor apprentices.
Assist in OSP (outside plant) installations.
Pull cables up to 100 pairs or smaller unassisted.
Install prefab assemblies unassisted.
Assist in site grounding and pulling low voltage and telecom cables.
Participate in job site cleanup and maintain a clean work area.
Install Wiremold, sleeves, Panduit, and ENT.
Install pull and junction boxes up to 24" x 24".
Assist with Tugger setup and operation for large wire pulls (requires certification).
Calculate wire load and conduit sizing layouts.
Assist with exterior underground and interior overhead/underfloor raceway layouts.
Assist with grounding grid under slab, grounding ring exterior, and building grounding.
Assist with splicing, crimp tools, and mechanical lug installations.
Perform operational risk management briefings, activity hazard analyses, and contribute to the risk register.
Troubleshoot and fix Cat 5, 5E, and 6 cable problems.
Terminate various manufacturers of copper termination blocks.
Knowledge of fiber termination connectors and fiber optic cables.
Provide own hand tools.
Train and supervise apprentices, focusing on safety, quality, and schedule adherence.
Wear provided PPE at all times on site; provide and wear personal long pants, shirts with at least 4" sleeves, and safety boots.
Qualifications
4+ years of experience in the commercial communications industry with a high school diploma or GED, or 2+ years with an Associate degree.
Valid driver's license for equipment operation (training provided).
Experience in room build-out, Cat6, fiber optic termination, and interpreting drawings and as-builts.
Familiarity with BlueBeam, Fluke Versiv, MS Office Word and Excel.
Knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper installation and termination procedures.
Abilities
Lift at least 100 pounds at once and 60 pounds for extended periods.
Relocate a 12-foot ladder unaided.
Work at heights up to 60 feet, climbing scaffolds, lifts, and ladders.
Perform physical activities such as walking, climbing, lifting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and overhead reaching routinely.
Good vision (corrected if necessary), color vision, hearing, and ability to communicate in English.
Use standard ladders with tools without exceeding weight limits.
Recognize problems or potential issues; do not need to solve them.
Apply general rules to specific problems logically.
Integrate information to form conclusions, recognize details at close range, and listen effectively.
