Position: 911 Communications Dispatcher
Employer: Marathon County Government
Base pay range: $23.73/hr (range shown by employer; actual pay based on skills and experience; discuss with recruiter)
Work schedule: 39.38 hours weekly; employees work 11.25 hour shifts with every other Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. Schedule is subject to change based on department needs. All work schedules include weekends and some holidays.

Position Summary Key position responsible for receiving, evaluating and acting upon information and requests concerning public safety and law enforcement. Works with computer-aided equipment and a multi-agency enhanced 911 system to dispatch law enforcement, ambulance, and fire services throughout Marathon County.
Responsibilities
Operate an enhanced 911 multi-agency system to dispatch patrol, fire, and ambulance units.
Receive requests for emergency assistance and dispatch patrol officers or other emergency services as needed.
Issue local weather watches and warnings based on information from the National Weather Service or certified weather spotters.
Dispatch emergency services for surrounding communities.
Operate console for radio traffic and Sheriff's Department phone system; relay messages or provide necessary information.
Utilize TIME system for DOT, CIB, and NCIC.
Manage computerized files, phone lists, and service area maps; apply necessary changes.
Develop solutions to improve work processes and customer service; contribute to a positive work culture.
Maintain regular attendance and work additional hours as required.
Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent; ability to speak clearly, stay calm under stress, and perform multi-tasking.
Related education, training, and certifications (e.g., CPR, First Responder, TIME) are desired.
Experience in 911 dispatch, EMT, First Responder, fire department, related dispatch/military/customer service, or similar fields is desired.
Ability to speak Hmong or Spanish is helpful.
Strong reputation and background suitable for pre-appointment investigation.
Ability to pass job-related testing, including a simulated dispatch test.
Selected candidates must pass a hearing test, drug screen, and psychological assessment (paid by the County).
Knowledge and adherence to applicable laws and departmental procedures; ability to make quick, effective decisions in emergency situations.
Examples of Work Performed
Operate 911 and multi-agency dispatch systems for patrol, fire, and ambulance sectors.
Receive calls from the public and dispatch appropriate emergency services; relay information to responders.
Relay weather-related information and advisories as needed.
Assist in dispatching services for surrounding communities.
Handle non-administrative radio traffic and department communications; manage phone systems and messages.
Use computer-aided dispatch tools and related systems.
Access and maintain security files, telephone lists, and maps; update information as required.
Contribute to process improvements and professional development aligned with County goals.
Maintain predictable attendance; work overtime as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of law enforcement principles and applicable laws and ordinances.
Ability to make immediate, accurate decisions in dispatch scenarios.
Strong judgment and calm, clear communication in emergencies.
Ability to receive and disseminate information clearly, especially under stress.
Courteous, firm interaction with the public in various scenarios.
Ability to refer communications to appropriate personnel and use computer-aided dispatch equipment.
Ability to operate teletype, switchboard, and related terminals.
Understanding of the County’s and department’s mission and values; contribute to a positive work culture.
Compensation Initial Hire Rate: $23.73/hour. Prior experience may qualify for lateral entry up to $25.18/hour. Benefits package available.
Selection Procedure The selection process may include assessment of related education and experience, criminal record check, oral interview, extensive background investigation including fingerprint check, references, and other job-related procedures. Final candidates must satisfactorily complete a hearing examination, psychological assessment, and drug screen (paid by County).
