Job Description: Communications Specialist III (Dispatcher) The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service skills, the ability to work independently, and advanced multi-tasking skills to listen, talk, read, and type simultaneously with accuracy.

Responsibilities include:

Receiving and dispatching information to DPS enforcement personnel and other agencies via radio systems, telephones, teletype, computer-aided dispatch, and fax machine.

Maintaining CAD documentation of all radio transmissions, accident reports, teletype reports, SLED/CJIS, NLETS, and NCIC transactions.

Responding to calls from citizens requesting assistance for traffic accidents, reckless drivers, road rage, disabled motorists, and other emergencies. Providing information on road and weather conditions and best routes.

Retrieving information from computer terminals for driver's license and vehicle registration checks, including in-state and out-of-state inquiries, and NCIC checks for stolen vehicles, wanted persons, and stolen guns.

Guiding law enforcement officers to accident scenes or other situations requiring response.

Monitoring map systems to locate incidents and maintaining recorder systems.

Acting as backup for the Emergency Preparedness Division in receiving notifications from nuclear facilities about potential radioactive releases.

Responding to after-hours calls from the Department of Transportation and Department of Revenue for public inquiries or assistance.

Working Conditions:

This position operates in an office setting, requiring the ability to sit for prolonged periods and maintain composure in stressful situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in a technical communications field may substitute for experience.

Entry-level work experience with voice communication systems or switchboard operations.

Must be a US citizen, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid driver's license.

Additional Requirements:

Must pass extensive background checks, including criminal, driving, drug use, reference checks, polygraph, interview, and drug screening.

Ability to communicate effectively with law enforcement and the public, both orally and in writing.

Ability to type and operate a computer, solicit accurate information in emergencies, remain calm, and make quick decisions under stress.

Must pass and maintain NCIC certification.

Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment, including rotating 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours.

Must respond immediately to emergencies and be able to work in a high-pressure environment.

Note:

Applicants must meet all listed additional requirements to be considered.

The position is essential and requires working rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with a minimum of 40 hours weekly. The South Carolina Highway Patrol operates four regional Telecommunications Centers in Blythewood, Charleston, Florence, and Greenville.
