Communications Specialist III (Dispatcher)

Overview
Communications Specialist III (Dispatcher) role with the State of South Carolina. The ideal candidate will have strong customer service skills, the ability to work independently, and advanced multi-tasking abilities to listen, talk, read, and type accurately. This is an essential position requiring rotating 12-hour shifts. Responsibilities
Receive and dispatch information to South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) enforcement personnel and other agencies using two-way radio systems, telephones, teletype, computer-aided dispatch (CAD), and fax. Maintain CAD documentation of radio transmissions, collision call-in reports, teletype reports, and related CJIS/NLETS/NCIC transactions. Receive calls from citizens requesting assistance for traffic accidents, reckless drivers, road conditions, and other emergencies; provide information on road and weather conditions and best routes. Retrieve information from computer terminals for driver’s license and vehicle registration, and inquire NCIC for stolen vehicles, wanted/missing persons, and stolen gun reports. Direct law enforcement officers to traffic accident scenes or other incidents; read maps to locate incidents and relay locations to troopers. Maintain recorder systems and notify personnel of malfunctions. Serve as backup for the Emergency Preparedness Division (EPD) in receiving notifications from nuclear facilities of potential releases and notify appropriate agencies. Receive calls after normal hours for the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Revenue (DOR). Qualifications

High school diploma and entry-level work experience with voice communications systems or central switchboard operations. An associate degree in a technical communications discipline may be substituted for the required experience. Agency Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma and entry-level work experience with voice communications systems or central switchboard operations, or an acceptable equivalency approved by the Division of State Human Resources. An associate’s degree in a technical communications discipline may be substituted for the required experience. Additional Requirements
Must be a US citizen and at least 18 years old Must have a valid driver’s license Must be able to perform all essential and marginal job functions of a Communications Specialist III (Dispatcher) Undergo extensive background review including criminal history, driving history, drug history, reference checks, polygraph, interview board, and pre-employment drug screening Provide current or former employer information to verify public safety dispatch experience Ability to convey and interpret oral and written communications with law enforcement and the public Ability to type and operate a computer or quickly acquire skills Ability to solicit accurate information in emergencies and remain calm under pressure Ability to relate well with the public over the phone and read maps Ability to pass and maintain NCIC certification Independence in completing work with accountability in the absence of a supervisor Ability to work at a fast pace requiring quick, sound decisions Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours on short notice Preferred Qualifications
