Overview
Media Specialist (Grades: PreK-6) at Dallas Independent School District. Provide leadership under the direction of Library Media Services to ensure that all students are effective users of ideas and information. Supervise and manage the school library/media center and programs. Engage learners through print and digital resources to access, create, and share content, and collaborate with other learners as global citizens. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure the library/media center is integrated into instructional programs. Proficiency in engaging learners with a variety of instructional strategies is required. Major Responsibilities Use the TEKs/SEs as the basis for instruction, along with library curriculum products (including Library Scope and Sequence). Provide group instruction and individual guidance to help students locate resources and use research techniques. Prepare strategic plans to meet School Library Programs: Standards and Guidelines for Texas. Participate as an educational leader and change agent in curriculum development by consulting with teachers on the use of materials and scheduling for classroom instruction. Model and promote collaborative planning, cooperative teaching, and direct instruction based on learners’ needs and state standards. Model and promote high standards of conduct and integrity in the use of internet and other resources; instruct students in ethical use of information. Provide ongoing learning opportunities for students and staff to foster engagement, especially in information technology and information literacy. Supervise Media Assistant(s) and student aides; manage multiple interruptions and multi-task under pressure. Provide instructional access to library resources through open, flexible scheduling of classes, small groups, and individuals; create an environment conducive to learning with appropriate behavior. Maintain a balanced, well-organized collection of print and digital resources aligned with policies and current needs across subjects. Implement library management operations including budgeting, purchasing, scheduling, facilities/resources management, supervising staff, reporting, and inventory. Encourage a high level of circulation, including inter-library loan, to extend access beyond the campus and beyond instructional hours. Support academic rigor by integrating research and information processing skills to prepare students for college, workforce, and lifelong learning, while encouraging creativity and risk-taking. Work with the community and libraries to promote goals benefitting all students. Discipline in accordance with board policies and regulations; uphold students’ rights to free selection of materials. Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward the school library and love of reading in a safe, age-appropriate environment. Stay informed about information culture and incorporate it into the library program. Communicate effectively in oral, written, electronic, and nonverbal forms. Comply with applicable laws, policies, and standards in library/media services. Develop and coordinate ongoing evaluation of the library/media center program and implement changes based on data. Engage in self-evaluation and professional growth; participate in professional associations and publications as appropriate. Perform administrative tasks to keep the library orderly, up-to-date, and functioning properly. Perform other duties as assigned related to the library program. Time and effort reporting requirements for federally funded incumbents, as appropriate. Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required. Work Environment The work environment is typically moderate in noise. Travel within the district is integral to this job. Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is essential; remote working arrangements are not available for campus-based positions. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a directly related field with valid Texas Library certification; Master’s degree preferred. Two years or more as a highly qualified teacher; bilingual skills are a plus. Working knowledge of library and information science. Ability to instruct and manage students in varied environments. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing environment; commitment to staying current with professional developments. Salary will be based on the Board-approved salary schedule.
