About the Position
The Public Relations Coordinator supports the Mississippi Library Commission’s mission by leading strategic communications, enhancing public awareness of agency programs, and promoting a consistent, professional image of the agency. This role manages MLC’s public relations, social media, content creation, publications, and community engagement efforts across multiple platforms. The coordinator works closely with all MLC departments to develop and implement communication strategies that inform, engage, and inspire both internal and external audiences.
Responsibilities Strategic Communications & Public Relations
— Collaborate with MLC leadership to establish and implement communication and marketing strategies aligned with agency goals. Develop and maintain a consistent brand identity across all public-facing channels. Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, articles, presentations, newsletters, talking points, and internal communications. Support crisis communication and emergency response by distributing timely and accurate information to appropriate individuals and groups. Plan and support agency events, public meetings, and professional presentations. Oversee procurement and management of agency-branded commodities.
Social Media Management
— Develop and execute social media strategies in alignment with MLC’s communications goals. Manage agency presence on YouTube, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, including content creation, scheduling, and audience engagement. Monitor social media activity, respond to public inquiries, and manage online reputation. Stay updated on trends by monitoring other state agencies and local library systems; advise leadership on noteworthy developments. Plan and maintain a social media content calendar and analyze performance data to optimize campaigns.
Content Creation & Publications
— Create, curate, and publish engaging multimedia content, including graphics, videos, brochures, and digital posts. Oversee the creation and distribution of agency publications such as newsletters (e.g., On the Same Page), the Annual Report, posters, and flyers. Edit and maintain agency web content, LibGuides, and internal/external messaging platforms. Lead graphic design work and multimedia marketing initiatives to promote MLC services and events. Oversee agency activities/programs/events as requested.
Community Engagement & Professional Development
— Host and facilitate monthly “Public Relations Happy Hour” as a Continuing Education event for library staff statewide. Provide training and guidance to library staff on public relations and social media best practices. Deliver professional presentations on PR topics to library professionals across Mississippi.
Analytics & Reporting
— Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as engagement, reach, and audience growth. Generate regular reports on communication and social media performance for administration. Use data insights to continuously refine messaging and improve outreach effectiveness.
What you'll need to be Successful
Candidate should demonstrate good communication skills, customer service abilities, a friendly and professional demeanor, must possess the ability to work well independently upon instruction, must have knowledge and skill to both perform and review the work that is overseen. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong graphic design and video editing abilities; proficiency with social media management tools, design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite), and analytics platforms; familiarity with Constant Contact, LibGuides, Canva, and website CMS platforms is a plus; ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail under tight deadlines; comfortable with public speaking and presenting to varied audiences; strong work ethic and understanding of agency as public-facing information provider.
