Overview
Assistant Professor position in the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley The School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences (SEEMS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level to be part of a growing ocean and coastal sciences research cluster. We seek candidates with a teaching and research focus that will complement and expand on our existing research areas, which include coastal geology and geomorphology; coastal watersheds and wetlands; physical oceanography; biophysical interactions; environmental variability and climate change; continental shelf, benthic, planktonic, and fish species population connectivity and genetics; biochemistry and marine geochemistry; and ocean observing and sensing. We are especially interested in candidates who can make use of the abundant, under-studied natural laboratories of the region and are interested in interdisciplinary collaboration within the School. UTRGV is a rapidly expanding Hispanic serving institution in the Rio Grande Valley. The university has a new ocean and coastal sciences research facility in Port Isabel, Texas, across Laguna Madre from South Padre Island (SPI). The facilities at Port Isabel expand on the existing marine science laboratory on SPI, an interdisciplinary coastal field station with active research, education and outreach programs. SEEMS has observational resources including oceanographic vessels, gliders, ROVs, and expanding instrumental arrays. UTRGV faculty and their students have access to the TACC supercomputing clusters. UTRGV is an ADVANCE institution, receiving NSF funds to increase diversity and participation of women in STEM. Qualifications
Minimum requirement: Ph.D. from an accredited university in a coastal and marine science related discipline. Proven or highly promising research program in a relevant field. Experience or promise in securing nationally competitive external research funding. Strong potential for collaboration within SEEMS and with external partners; willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary research and education. Responsibilities
Develop and lead an externally funded, internationally competitive research program in ocean, coastal, or marine sciences. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to the candidate’s expertise; contribute to curriculum development and student mentoring. Engage in college-wide and university-level service, mentorship, and outreach activities. Collaborate with a growing ocean and coastal sciences research cluster and leverage regional natural laboratories and facilities (Port Isabel, SPI field station, regional observatories, gliders, ROVs, and vessels). Contribute to diverse and inclusive academic environments consistent with UTRGV’s ADVANCE goals. Facilities and Resources
Access to Port Isabel facilities, SPI field station, observational resources (vessels, gliders, ROVs), and instrument arrays. Access to TACC supercomputing clusters. Equal Opportunity
