Overview The Community Service Officer I (Limited-Term) performs non-sworn duties in support of police operations and attends a POST-certified Police Academy or Community Service Officer Academy to receive basic law enforcement training. Appointment to the Community Service Officer I position will not be effective until the start of the CSO Academy, which is typically held in the Winter or Summer.

Responsibilities Examples of duties before training and during training are described below, with incumbents may not perform all listed duties or may be required to perform related duties as required.

Acquire working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment, and organizational systems.

Perform routine clerical duties including filing, checking, and recording information; operate standard office equipment; sort and file documents and records.

Provide basic assistance in research projects, special reports, and other division problems.

Attend the Sacramento Police Academy or Community Service Officer Academy and receive instruction in organization, rules and regulations, community service, crime prevention, evidentiary rules, communications, EVOC, basic criminal investigations, physical fitness, first aid, and related police procedures.

Qualifications and Abilities Abilities

include:

Acquire knowledge of police principles, state laws, City ordinances, and first aid through training.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; write clearly and accurately; read and interpret complex technical documents in English.

Observe, remember, record, and recall pertinent facts; read maps; analyze information to determine appropriate actions.

Interact courteously with the public; establish cooperative working relationships with staff and the community.

Operate a police radio, mobile data computer, and office equipment; develop skill in the use of less-lethal protection (OC).

In addition, the CSO I must develop skill in firearms use and undergo strenuous physical conditioning during the academy.

Experience and Education Education:

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Experience:

No experience required.

Special Qualifications

Age:

Must be at least 18 years old by time of appointment.

Felony Convictions:

Free of felony convictions under California Government Code Section 1029.

Background:

Must pass a background investigation, including criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph, credit check, and drug history.

Medical/Drug/Psychological:

Must pass medical examination, drug test, and psychological test.

Driver License:

Valid California Class C Driver License at appointment; loss of license is grounds for discipline.

Respiratory Protection:

May require wearing respiratory protection; facial hair must be shaved if it interferes with a proper fit.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical requirements include sitting, standing, walking, running, reaching, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The position requires hearing and speaking for interactions and safety; vision must include depth, near, far, night, peripheral, and color perception. Work is outdoors in all weather and may involve loud noises, moving vehicles, chemicals, blood, or other exposures. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

2. Supplemental Questionnaire (Pass/Fail):

3. Online Exam (Pass/Fail):

Must have taken and passed the online examination with a score of 70% or higher for further consideration. Refer to the City’s examinations site for access.

4. Eligibility:

Passing candidates are placed on an eligible list for two years. If already on an active eligible list, reapplication may not be necessary.

5. Oral Interview (100%):

Job-related questions administered by the Sacramento Police Department.

6. Physical Agility Test:

Pass/Fail after the oral interview.

7. Background Process:

If selected for appointment, must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including criminal history, fingerprinting, polygraph, psychological, credit, and drug history.
