Second Renaissance
About Basis
Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals.
The first is to
understand and build intelligence.
This involves establishing the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explaining, and constructing software that embodies these principles.
The second goal is to
advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems.
This aims to expand the scale, complexity, and breadth of problems we can solve today and to accelerate our capacity to solve future problems.
To achieve these objectives, we are building a new technological foundation inspired by human reasoning and a collaborative organization that prioritizes human values.
About the Role Research scientists lead Basis’ efforts to deepen understanding of the conceptual, mathematical, and computational principles of intelligence.
We seek individuals who are technically excellent and value exploring foundational concepts. Our research scientists/engineers aim to conduct rigorous, high-quality science, while being open to experimentation, mistakes, and radically different ideas.
Basis emphasizes collaboration, both internally and with external partners; we look for team players who enjoy working on large, complex problems.
We expect you to:
Demonstrate the ability to conduct high-quality scientific research, evidenced by publications, technical reports, or software projects.
Preferred qualifications include:
PhD or equivalent experience in areas such as statistics, programming languages, machine learning, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, or mathematics.
Excited about solving real-world problems and making a positive societal impact.
Responsibilities
Develop and explore computational theories of intelligence, including reasoning, learning, and decision-making.
Collaborate with domain experts inside and outside Basis to address scientific and societal challenges.
Extract insights from problem-solving to formulate general mathematical and computational theories.
Develop and maintain open-source software.
(Optional) Publish and present research findings in journals and conferences.
Contribute to the culture and strategic direction of Basis.
Role Details Exceptional candidates who do not meet all the criteria are encouraged to apply.
