Technical Program Manager — Multiple Projects
About Basis
Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals. The first is to
understand and build intelligence.
This involves establishing the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explaining, and constructing software that embodies these principles. The second is to
advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems.
This aims to expand the scale, complexity, and breadth of problems we can solve today and, more importantly, to accelerate our ability to solve problems in the future. To achieve these goals, we are building a new technological foundation inspired by human reasoning and fostering a new type of collaborative organization that prioritizes human value. About the Role
We’re seeking a passionate Technical Program Manager to drive ambitious research projects forward. You will work across multiple projects, acting as a key link between researchers, engineering teams, leadership, and external collaborators, requiring both technical depth and project management expertise. Core Responsibilities
Develop and maintain project roadmaps, translating strategic goals into milestones and tasks. Lead regular team meetings, triage issues, and ensure research scientists and engineers stay on track. Coordinate between technical and project teams, resolving dependencies. Write and review technical design documents and project plans. Model human, compute, and financial resources across projects. Contribute technically when necessary. Engage with external project partners, nurturing existing relationships and cultivating new collaborations. Refine Basis’ approach to project management in research. Qualifications and Attributes
We’re looking for someone with: At least 4 years managing scientific or engineering projects with demonstrable impact. PhD-level understanding of AI/ML concepts (not necessarily a PhD). Proficiency with project management tools such as Linear, JIRA, or similar. Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaboration tools (e.g., Notion, GSuite). Excellent writing skills to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely. More than specific qualifications, we value your ability to navigate uncertainty and find clarity in complexity. The problems we address are inherently challenging and lack clear solutions. Our ideal candidate: Thinks from first principles, knowing when to adopt or discard standard practices. Simplifies complexity and addresses unnecessary processes. Automates where appropriate. Makes tough decisions on project direction and resource allocation, often with incomplete information. Can distill nebulous research questions into concrete, actionable plans. Balances individual team member needs with project progress. Works and acts quickly to maintain team momentum. Reduces uncertainty and ambiguity persistently. Possesses expertise in core technical areas like statistics, causal reasoning, probabilistic machine learning, and programming languages, with a willingness to learn more. Is a fast learner, capable of building upon a solid mathematical foundation into diverse technical areas. Obsesses over effective program management and continuously seeks improvements. Role Details
