Overview

The Vermont Department of Taxes, Compliance Division, seeks a talented individual to support public programs through accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position involves review of taxpayer records for compliance and providing education to taxpayers. This is a home-based position with periodic travel to the Montpelier main office and sites in Grand Isle, Franklin, and Chittenden counties. The department uses proven, dynamic technologies to fund initiatives that preserve the environment, build vibrant communities, strengthen families, and more. Review and analyze taxpayer returns Prepare tax assessments and adjustments to bring taxpayers into compliance (as appropriate) Respond to and work with taxpayers and/or their representatives Play an active role in taxpayer appeals and/or settlements Conduct on-site audits as appropriate Ideal candidate

Be inquisitive, collaborative, digitally proficient and self-motivated Desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds Desire to continue to learn and grow Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years or more of college coursework in accounting, auditing or business administration. OR Two (2) years or more of experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration. OR CPA and one (1) year or more of experience at a professional level in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or business administration. OR Two (2) years or more of experience as a Tax Field Auditor I or Tax Examiner II or III. Compensation and Benefits

The hourly salary ranges from $25.10 to $39.19, with an annualized salary of approximately $52,208 to $81,515.20. The total compensation package includes competitive State benefits and various employee programs. The starting salary may be negotiable based on experience and qualifications. As of July 14, 2025, the step 1 rate for pay grade 22 is $25.98 per hour. About The Compliance Division

The Compliance Division promotes Vermont taxpayer compliance with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff. Background Checks

This position requires fingerprinting and a background check due to access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. All candidates will undergo Vermont and national criminal record checks, with the right to withdraw prior to fingerprinting or the background check. Who May Apply
