The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s
student body as an Assistant Professor of Archaeology in the Department of Anthropology beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. The search focuses on North American archaeology, with openness to temporal and geographic breadth. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a course on Texas Archaeology and develop local research opportunities benefiting students and local communities. The successful candidate will teach introductory-level courses in anthropology and upper-division and graduate courses in the candidate’s sub-field of specialization. Responsibilities Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in anthropology/archaeology, including introductory and advanced offerings.
Contribute to undergraduate majors in anthropology, including the Archaeology concentration, and to the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Develop and maintain an active program of research with scholarly publications.
Collaborate with colleagues across programs such as CHAPS (Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools) and PHCE (Public Heritage and Community Engagement) in the College of Liberal Arts, and with researchers in SEEMS, SIBCS, and the School of Medicine.
Demonstrate classroom excellence with innovative course delivery and actively pursue external funding or a plan to obtain future funding.
Qualifications Required: Ph.D. in Anthropology (or related field) by August 31, 2026; active research program with publications; demonstrated potential for teaching excellence.
Required: 18+ graduate credit hours in Anthropology.
Preferred: Ability to teach or develop a Texas Archaeology course; experience mentoring students at undergraduate and graduate levels; evidence of external funding or a plan to obtain funding; potential for developing local research opportunities.
