Special Education Teachers

— Special education teachers work with students to accomplish goals on their IEPs in push-in, pull-out, and self-contained settings. Some schools may support co-teaching in general education classrooms.

Build trusting relationships with staff, students, and families

Instructional Responsiveness & Content Knowledge

Internalize and teach challenging and engaging lessons informed by instructional data

Review student data with department/grade-level teams to plan re-teaching and follow-up lessons

Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and team meetings

Mentor a Capital Teaching Resident, when assigned, through coaching and feedback conversations

IEP Case Management

Serve as case manager for students with IEPs on your caseload

Create and update IEP One-Pagers; monitor IEP goals

Distribute quarterly progress reports and ensure accommodations

Collaborate with related service providers and participate in IEP Team Meetings

Complete required documentation and maintain records

Care of Students & Classroom Culture

Build a classroom culture that empowers students and fosters belonging

Implement school-wide and classroom management policies

Create a responsive and inclusive environment for families

Other Information & Requirements

On-duty hours approximate 7:30 am–5:00 pm two times a week and 7:30 am–4:00 pm three times a week; school day instruction 8:00 am–3:30 pm

Clerical duties related to textbooks, supplies, reports, attendance, etc.

Morning, lunch, and afternoon duties as assigned

Pass all required background checks

Additional responsibilities may arise during the year (field trips, conferences, etc.)

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (Required)

Commitment to working with students from communities with limited access to quality educational opportunities (Required)

At least two years of teaching experience in a PreK3-12th grade school (Required)

Bachelor’s degree in content area (Preferred)

Experience/strength in content area (Preferred)

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: Teacher salaries are exempt and start at $65,500 and increase with years of experience. See salary scale here. Teachers can earn up to $5,000 in renewal add-ons to their base salary each year.

Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision insurances; voluntary benefits; employer-paid short/long-term disability, life insurance, and One Medical membership.

Retirement: 403(b) with 3% employer contribution and 3% match; vesting after three years.

Schedule: up to 10 paid sick days, 12 paid holidays, and scheduled breaks; exact schedule in offer letter.

Transit: Pre-tax transportation deductions through WMATA.

Development opportunities: Special Education Fellowship, School Culture Champion Grants, Classroom Innovation Grants, and other programs.
