Position Summary Manage workflow and provide daily supervision to the medical team, participate regularly in medical care and partner with our Shelter Veterinarian. Ensure operational flow of the day, ensuring that all tasks are completed by all parties and requests from other departments are received and delegated to the staff. Under the guidance of the Shelter Veterinarian and the Director of Animal Care, establish medical standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure that they are followed by the team. Participates regularly in and oversees the team, executes safe, humane medical practices and procedures as directed by the Director of Animal Care. Creates a healthy environment for all animals by monitoring their medical needs and maintains their medical care and records while with St. Hubert's. Lead, guide and support all medical staff. Exemplifies and helps maintain a positive work environment for all staff St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center. Key Responsibilities: Leadership – Ensures the smooth operation of the Medical Department and serves to meet and set high standards for teamwork across the organization. Supervises and leads the Medical Team, including the Clinic Supervisor, Veterinary Clinic Scheduler, Medical Technicians and Medical Assistants. Participates in full shelter rounds or designates a staff member from the shelter medical team to attend. In conjunction with the Animal Care Manager, responsible for NJAC 823a, maintaining a high standard of animal care and welfare for all animals in program. Acts as a point of contact for other departments to ensure the medical team upholds their responsibilities to other departments. Delegation of daily tasks and duties, accountable for their correct completion. Supervises with integrity, authority, fairness, and open-mindedness. Responsible for hiring, training, supporting growth, supervising and evaluating the performance of the Medical Team. Conducts and participates in regular medical staff meetings. Works with the Director of Animal Care to coordinate in-house training, workshops, and deployments. Responsible for resolving any staff conflict and maintaining a healthy, safe and positive work environment for employees and volunteers. Responds to requests from staff and the public as appropriate. Acts as the manager on duty for the Animal Care department, or other shelter departments when needed. Oversee, coordinate and participate in the performance of euthanasia with the support of the Shelter Veterinarian and Director of Animal Care. Oversee, coordinate and participate in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of medical equipment within the shelter. Proficient in Fear Free/humane medical handling practices. Under the guidance of the Shelter Veterinarian and the Director of Animal Care, establish, oversee and participate in creating Standard Operating Procedures for all aspects of medical care. Oversee, coordinate and participate in daily medical rounds. Ensure animal medical records are accurate and complete in a timely fashion. Ensure all animals receive appropriate medical care in the appropriate timeline. When necessary, work with outside vet partners to provide care and diagnostics to St. Hubert’s animals. Rotation with the on-call medical emergency phone. Qualifications and Requirements Knowledge of and ability to lead veterinary medical and surgical procedures and processes. Knowledge of shelter medicine and variance in public vs shelter protocols and treatments. Ability and competence to teach and train all levels of assistants and technicians, ensuring safety and compliance. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate a team, and identify skills in others that can be developed. Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures. Ability to be flexible, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize. A team-oriented and collaborative approach to work, with an ability to bring out the best in peers. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to gather information from colleagues. Ability to think strategically and solve problems creatively.
