Assistant Professor of Practice Oregon State University Department: Crop/Soil Extn Field Fac (ACS) Appointment Type: Academic Faculty Job Location: Salem Recommended Full-Time Salary Range: $60,990-$80,004 The Division of Extension and Engagement invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the regional director, department head, and program leader. This position is with the Division of Extension and Engagement’s Extension Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources program and serves Marion and Clackamas counties. The academic home is the Department of Crop and Soil Science in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University. The faculty member reports to the Regional Director assigned to the Western Region and collaborates with the supervision team (regional directors, the Department Head of Crop and Soil Science, and the Extension Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources Program Leader). Active contributions to scholarship are required. The purpose is to provide leadership in the development, delivery, synthesis, and evaluation of Extension and applied research in crop production systems for grass seed, legume seed, hops, small grain cereals, and other field crops in the assigned counties. Responsibilities include needs assessment, development and delivery of Extension non-credit programs and educational materials, and conducting applied research to support Extension activities. Travel to various sites in the Mid-Valley region is required. Responsibilities
70% – Extension teaching and related activities
Deliver high-quality, non-credit educational experiences for Extension audiences using OSU’s Quality Teaching Framework (inclusivity, evidence-based teaching, learner mentorship). Conduct ongoing needs assessments to determine educational needs of broad audiences in the assigned counties and develop a comprehensive field crops Extension program. Deliver Extension non-credit programs (demonstrations, workshops, field tours, field days) and use digital communications (websites, publications, video conferencing, hybrid teaching, and other online methods). Design programs to maximize participation across regions (central or online) and create evaluation protocols to report program impacts locally and regionally. Develop culturally inclusive materials, use technology to extend reach (Ask-Extension, CRM), and manage high volumes of inquiries with scholarly outputs (publications, videos, etc.). Follow OSU brand guidelines and digital publishing standards; ensure accessibility and reasonable accommodations. Provide one-on-one consultation and technical advice via digital tools and phone; travel to engage stakeholders. Engage in access and inclusion initiatives; include these activities in annual plans and promotions dossiers. Coordinate local pesticide recertification efforts and maintain Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License. Maintain records and reports to division administration, department, and college; collaborate with Extension regional directors and elected officials as appropriate.
15% – Partnerships/collaboration/networking
Develop networks with diverse groups to support program quality and advisory input. Identify program needs through local advisory groups, commodity commissions, producer meetings, and collaborations with researchers, Extension colleagues, and public/private agencies. Engage with community organizations to support innovation and economic development; work with commodity organizations as appropriate.
15% – Accountability
Develop annual plans addressing educational needs and evaluate program impact; use Faculty Success platform for reporting. Implement cost-recovery practices, gather peer and community evaluations, and participate in relevant Extension working groups. Maintain records and provide reports to division administration, department, college, and external audiences; communicate science-based information to stakeholders. Promote Extension programs regionally and nationally; complete civil rights training and report civil rights data as required. Uphold a respectful, inclusive, safe workplace culture; travel as needed.
10% – Applied research
Conduct applied research and demonstration trials in field crops, collaborating with weed sciences, entomology, soil sciences, and plant pathology. Evaluate and publish impacts of research and Extension programs; secure outside grants/contracts to support activities. Disseminate progress via peer-reviewed publications, meetings, Extension events, and digital tools; stay current with scientific and industry trends.
5% – Scholarship
Produce scholarly outcomes per OSU guidelines, including durable, web-findable materials in journal articles, Extension publications, and other recognized formats. Demonstrate impact through dissemination and adoption by peers and communities; pursue invited presentations and evidence of program impact.
5% – Service
Engage in regional and statewide Extension programs; collaborate with Willamette Valley agencies; participate in seed certification issues in assigned counties; serve on committees and professional organizations.
Qualifications
Master of Science in agronomy, crop science, soil science, plant protection, or related discipline; degree must be completed by the application date. Strong background in crop production; demonstrated evidence of teaching, especially non-credit education; experience with applied agriculture research. Must have or obtain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment. Proven ability to collaborate with diverse partners; strong verbal and written communication skills for broad audiences.
