Overview

Hardware Reliability Engineer (Starlink Product) – Bastrop, TX

SpaceX is leveraging our experience building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the world’s largest satellite constellation and most advanced broadband internet system. We design, build, test, and operate all parts of the system, thousands of satellites and consumer antennae that allow users to connect within minutes of unboxing. The Hardware Reliability Team is an interdisciplinary group focused on the reliability of the mechanical and electrical hardware used to connect customers to satellites. The role spans multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, RF, software, test, etc.) and collaborates with core SpaceX groups to bring hardware from concept development to full-scale high-volume production. You will use data to understand factors that drive process and product reliability, identify and solve technical problems, and work hands-on on the factory floor and in the test lab to improve hardware reliability and the user experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement reliability test strategies for new products and subcomponents to maximize field life and minimize early life failures
  • Develop, implement, and validate test and inspection processes for new and existing products and production processes, ensuring objective criteria and reliability goals are met
  • Design and execute environmental, RF, mechanical, and electrical testing techniques tailored to the product and its functions
  • Write test programs to exercise product functionality under various conditions and environments
  • Automate reliability testing initiatives and reporting using data visualization and thorough product knowledge
  • Define ongoing reliability testing strategy to monitor manufacturing processes and screen for long-term reliability defects due to process and component variability
  • Monitor product and process quality during production ramp-up and drive improvements to areas under-performing on key quality metrics
  • Investigate production and test failures, identify and mitigate root causes to reduce risk and improve design and process reliability
  • Contain suspect or non-conforming product and guide production and engineering teams in quarantining and rework activities
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, manufacturing, and network engineering to maximize reliability across disciplines

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in test, analysis, manufacturing, or hardware development (internship and project experience applicable)

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with electronics and mechanical design/analysis including RF knowledge
  • Programming experience in Python, C, and SQL with emphasis on data analysis and automation
  • Creative problem solver who can work independently or in a team, delivering on schedule
  • Experience in fast-paced, iterative design environments in consumer electronics, mobile devices, aerospace, automotive, or related fields

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted
  • Onsite work location required; remote work not considered
  • To conform to U.S. export regulations (ITAR), eligibility criteria apply (U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or otherwise eligible to obtain required authorizations). Learn more about ITAR here.
