About the Division of Youth Services (DYS): The mission of DYS is to protect, restore and improve public safety utilizing a continuum of care that provides effective supervision, promotes accountability to victims and communities, and helps youth lead constructive lives through positive youth development. The division operates 15 secure facilities for youth ages 10 to 21 and provides juvenile detention, assessment, commitment, and parole services. This position is a direct care/essential role that provides direct supervision of youth in DYS State Operated Secure Facilities. Responsibilities include safety and security, youth programming, documentation/recording, training, and organizational accountability. This role may require overtime on a rotating basis based on business needs. Responsibilities
Safety/Security:
Direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre-adjudicated youth in a secure setting. Enforce behavioral management plans; supervise youth, conduct youth orientation, intervene in crises, use non-escalation and de-escalation techniques, and conduct searches. May involve use of physical response in emergencies, incident debriefs, and post-incident review. Youth Center Programming:
Implement and follow the center’s behavioral management program, teach and coach youth, support initiatives related to programming and crisis intervention. Documentation/Recording and Reporting:
Document observations of youth behavior and program responses in logs and records systems; document group activities in appropriate databases. Organizational Accountability:
Contribute to a healthy, positive, trauma-responsive environment; adhere to the CDHS Code of Conduct, DYS Compliance Review Standards, and DYS policies; promote nonviolence, open communication, and ethical conduct. Training:
Complete DYS pre-service training, orientation, and ongoing online trainings; some travel may be required. Training focuses on problem-solving, youth relationship-building, trauma-informed care, and behavior management strategies. Minimum Qualifications
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience: High school diploma or GED Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work Substitutions:
Additional appropriate education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Physical requirements: Not sedentary; employees are on their feet and may climb stairs; be able to physically intervene with assaultive youth as needed. Preferred qualifications include college education in a behavioral health or juvenile justice-related field; experience with adjudicated/detained youth in secure facilities or behavioral health settings; experience facilitating psychoeducational groups; trauma-informed work with adolescents; leadership roles and mentoring; and experience with verbal de-escalation. Highly Desirable Competencies
Conflict management Strong work ethic, integrity, dependability Sound judgment and decision-making Self-control and ability to manage stress Clear verbal communication and respectful interaction Ability to identify hazards and communicate information Ability to study information and document events clearly Work Environment
Shifts include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts may be 8, 10, or 12 hours; overtime may be required. Day shift work is not usually available. This position is essential and may require reporting during inclement weather. Travel may be required for training and assignments. Conditions of Employment
