Organizational Unit Overview: The ECU Department of Emergency Medicine is a vital part of ECU Health, a mission-driven, 1,708-bed academic health care system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties. In the Department of Emergency Medicine, our mission is to provide and continue to improve the quality of health care services whenever and wherever the patient needs them; to promote scholarly activity regarding emergency health care through education and research; and to maximize the accumulation and utilization of resources in order to accomplish service and scholarly activities, and promote the wellness and satisfaction of department members.

Our tertiary care catchment area includes more than 1.5 million people in eastern North Carolina, many of whom arrive via our integrated mobile critical care and air medical service. Our children’s ED opened in July 2012 and the children’s hospital opened in June 2013. In September of 2016, we extended our coverage to begin providing professional medical services at ECU Health Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina.

Our current faculty members possess various interests and expertise leading to extensive state and national-level involvement. The emergency medicine residency is well-established and includes 12 EM and 2 EM/IM residents per year.

Job Duties The Department of Emergency Medicine at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine seeks a candidate that is board certified/eligible in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology to join their faculty. The successful candidate will provide clinical care at the ECU Health Medical Center Emergency Department and/or ECU Health Beaufort Hospital located in Washington, NC and ECU Health Outer Banks Hospital located in Nags Head, NC. Candidate will provide instruction to medical students and appropriate training and supervision to Emergency Medicine residents. Highlights include:

Joining a stable, established Medical Toxicology Division with a very active consult service; active research program; significant community outreach, medical school involvement.

Hospital privileges at ECU Health Medical Center, 974-bed level 1 trauma center, 55 main ED beds with 16 additional spaces, 16 pediatric ED beds

Growing 9-hospital physician led healthcare system

7,8, or 9 hour shifts

Multiple EM subspecialties: EMS, Ultrasound, and Sports medicine

Full Trauma/STEMI/Stroke

Supervise medical students, EM residents, APPs, and other rotating residents depending on shift site

Development opportunities for educators and medical directors- 2 year long in-house development programs, and Masters in Education option

Fixed Term (12-month) or Tenure Track position available. Position contingent upon availability of funding. Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). Minimum Education/Experience: MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification. Board certified/eligible in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: MD or DO or foreign equivalent.
