Exam #: 22/39D11/04CH Monterey County is seeking entry-level Deputy District Attorney / Prosecutor I & II positions in the criminal division. Applicants who are pending California Bar results are encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants may be offered paid post-bar positions prior to receiving bar results. The District Attorney's Office has headquarters in Salinas with a satellite office in Monterey. The criminal division includes Felony Units, a Misdemeanor Prosecutions Unit, and a Juvenile Unit. Vertical prosecution is the standard approach. The office is an approved MCLE provider and conducts regular in-house training.
The eligible list established by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.
Responsibilities (example duties)
Attends scheduled court hearings such as arraignments, pretrial hearings and motions, sentencing, and probation revocations.
Marshals, reviews, and prepares evidence for presentation in court.
Prepares and prosecutes criminal and civil cases by presenting opening statements, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, making objections, arguing points of law, and presenting closing arguments.
Researches questions of law and applies statutory and decisional case law in case preparation for hearing in court.
Determines the nature and disposition of prosecutions and negotiates dispositions of criminal cases when appropriate.
Qualifications DEPUTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY I
(Salary: $6,902 – $9,365 Monthly)
Entry and first working level in the career series. Members of the California State Bar are required by date of hire; no prior legal experience required. May work under supervision in a criminal trial department handling misdemeanor prosecutions and may be promoted to higher levels subject to performance and recommendation.
DEPUTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY II
(Salary: $8,257 – $11,215 Monthly)
Second level in the career series. Expected to independently manage a routine caseload.

As of July 1, 2024, the Office may offer up to a $10,000 signing bonus for regular full-time hires for this classification from this recruitment.

The duties, responsibilities, powers and limitations of the Office of the District Attorney.

General knowledge and abilities for I and II:
The principals of criminal and civil law, criminal procedure, and trial practice; statutory, constitutional and decisional criminal laws of California.
Use a computer; gather and evaluate data; interpret statutes and case law;
Oral and written communication; cross-examination and courtroom presentation;
Organization and management of complex material; independent case management under supervision;
Ability to think creatively and train/mentor others; establish cooperative work relationships.
Employment Conditions
Independently manage a heavy caseload, with possible extra hours.
Rotate between Salinas and Monterey courthouses.
Successful background investigation; may include criminal history checks.
Respond to law enforcement requests when on duty.
