Description
The Ideker Laboratory is in the Division of Human Genetics and Precision Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. We are a dynamic research team focusing on bioinformatics, machine learning, and cancer biology, with open-source software projects and a goal to translate genotype to phenotype for precision diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Role
Senior BioMachine Learning Scientist to lead AI/ML R&D for the ADAPT project, a precision cancer therapy initiative funded by ARPA-H. The role requires expertise in bioinformatics, machine learning, systems biology, and project leadership, with a deep understanding of modern cancer biology. Responsibilities include:
Lead the design and implementation of deep learning approaches for drug recommendation in cancer.
Serve as computational lead in interdisciplinary teams to translate computational findings into therapeutic strategies.
Design, debug, and optimize algorithms to analyze multimodal datasets (genomic, proteomic, transcriptomic, and clinical data).
Develop multi-modal data fusion pipelines for biomarker discovery and therapy recommendation.
Create and validate tools to track tumor changes and adapt therapy plans in real time using biomarker data insights.
Create and oversee a central benchmarking platform for standardizing AI/ML models.
Contribute to a central cancer treatment and analysis platform ensuring data availability for clinicians and researchers.
Provide guidance to junior researchers, including PhD students and postdocs.
Lead development and dissemination of scalable bioinformatics software aligned with FAIR data principles.
Prepare reports, publications, and presentations; represent the lab at national and international conferences.
Collaborate with the Ideker Lab’s Program Manager to identify funding opportunities and contribute to grant proposals.
Contribute to other projects within the Ideker Lab research portfolio as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Nine years of related experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus five years of related experience.
Advanced knowledge of HPC / data science / CI.
Experience with HPC hardware/software power and performance analysis; development and deployment of large-scale HPC/data science/CI applications.
Strong communication skills with both management and technical/non-technical audiences.
Ability to resolve complex computing/data/CI problems independently and as part of a team.
Experience in a complex computing/data/CI environment (HPC, data science tools, diverse domain science apps).
Proven ability to lead multiple concurrent projects and provide technical leadership.
Ability to assess technical needs, establish priorities, and lead development of solutions.
Experience in optimizing, benchmarking, HPC performance and power modeling.
Advanced knowledge of deep learning architectures and modern AI/ML technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of modern cancer biology, omics, and systems biology.
Ability to initiate research proposals and acquire funding.

Compensation
Pay Transparency Act: Annual Full Pay Range: $119,400 - $230,800 (will be prorated if appointment percentage
