Under general administrative direction, manages, and directs the activities of professional and technical engineering, architecture and/or landscape architecture personnel performing highly technical and administrative functions in connection with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of projects and systems. The essential functions of the class may vary depending upon assignment and may include: Directing, supervising, and coordinating the design of complex engineering, architecture, or landscape architecture projects. Conducting interviews, selecting, training, monitoring, and evaluating departmental staff and consultants. Planning, organizing, and directing the administration and management of contracts. Overseeing and reviewing the preparation of complex construction contracts and documents. Establishing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and administrative directives. Managing projects and coordinating activities between units and other groups. Consulting with technical staff, conducting meetings, and representing the City. Writing, reviewing, and approving documents. Supervising the review of shop drawings by contractors and field inspection staff. Performing other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
1. Seven (7) years verifiable professional engineering work experience in fields such as civil, electrical, mechanical, sanitary/chemical/environmental, transportation/traffic, or structural, with four (4) years as a licensed professional engineer in the specialty applied for. Two (2) of the seven (7) years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5241 Engineer in the specialty applied for. 2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California with a License Type as Structural Engineering. Notes
1. Some engineering positions may require a certificate issued by ICBO, ICC, or an equivalent certifying body. 2. Some positions may require additional special engineering licensing and/or work experience in areas such as Construction Management, Structural Design, Corrosion, Fire Protection, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental, or Instrumentation and Control Systems. Additional disciplines may be determined at a later time. 3. Most positions require a valid California Driver's License. Substitutions for Engineering Specialties
• A Master’s Degree in Engineering may substitute for 1 year of work experience. • A PhD in Engineering may substitute for 2 years of work experience. Out-of-state applicants : This note applies to all candidates applying from outside California. If licensed in another state and otherwise meeting minimum requirements but without California license, you may file for this examination and may be placed under waiver on the eligible list until the California license is presented. Working Conditions
Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to weather conditions; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods. Schedules may include weekends, holidays, part-time, nights, and/or overtime. Verification

A confidential eligible list of applicants who passed the examination will be created for certification purposes. The list is public upon request after exhaustion or expiration. The list/score report may change after adoption by the HR Director or Civil Service Commission. The list is valid for 6 months and may be extended.
