As part of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), it is the first and only free-standing pediatric hospital in Michigan, with a 228-bed facility internationally recognized in pediatric medicine, surgery, and research. The hospital engages in groundbreaking pediatric research and is often ranked among America’s best pediatric hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and Parent Magazine. It offers outpatient centers in Canton, Clinton Township, Dearborn, Detroit, Novi, Southfield and Troy, and provides a broad range of pediatric surgical services through a multidisciplinary team. Position Summary The Chief Executive Officer has overall operational responsibility for DMC Children’s Hospital. The CEO leads by example, setting clear strategies and performance expectations in collaboration with senior management, physicians, and the Governing Board. Functional Responsibilities
Maintains positive working relationships with physicians; fosters open communication and mutual understanding between physicians, facility leadership, and staff. Develops and leads a high-performing administrative team. Establishes a sense of pride and shared purpose among physicians, employees, and the community to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care. Maintains a highly visible presence, engaging with stakeholders to share strategies, healthcare trends, legislation, and activities; represents the facility as a vital provider and employer. Recruits and retains top physicians to collaborate with the facility. Exhibits strong communication, presentation and listening skills to ensure facility-wide collaboration, especially with physicians, employees, and the community. Demonstrates business acumen and knowledge of healthcare funding in competitive markets; makes complex, informed decisions. With the Chief Financial Officer, signs to certify the facility’s quarterly financials. Assesses strategic opportunities to enhance the facility’s market position. Ensures high standards of healthcare delivery and outcomes with a constant patient focus. Develops and communicates an executable vision including new services, partnerships, and ventures. Builds relationships with partners, payors, customers, and the community to support growth and quality care. Maintains positive employee relations through consistent communication and education. Leads development of physician/facility strategies to optimize long-term potential. Fosters a work climate that attracts high-quality staff and positions the facility as a provider of choice. Demonstrates success in integrating medical staff and creating opportunities for growth and profitability. Candidate Experience, Attributes And Education Requirements Minimum ten to fifteen years of progressive experience in facility or healthcare management, culminating in leading a complex entity in a culturally diverse, competitive urban environment. The following experiences and attributes are required or strongly preferred: Advanced understanding of healthcare and facility financial matters; strong knowledge of managed care. Experience as a senior operational executive in a proprietary facility or demonstrated ability to achieve positive margins in a competitive setting. Proven ability to develop and implement strategies that deliver high-quality, cost-effective care and drive growth through productivity and program development. Strong track record of physician relations, and ability to attract and retain excellent physicians; ability to collaborate with physicians for patient-focused care. Demonstrated bold leadership and ability to lead teams toward optimal performance. Professional Attributes Independent judgment and strong human relations skills; visionary with strategic thinking and execution capabilities. Ability to balance cost and quality while improving productivity and patient care. Up-to-date knowledge of healthcare trends and legislation with strong business acumen. Active community leadership and visibility in civic forums. Proven ability to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care through innovation and positive stakeholder relationships. Personal Attributes Excellent communication skills with diverse groups; strong interpersonal, public relations, and listening abilities. Collaborative approach that promotes feedback and teamwork to improve patient care and service delivery. High integrity and credibility with peers, senior leadership, medical staff, and the Board. Education/Certifications Bachelor’s degree in Business, Health Care Administration or related field required. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
