Benco Equipment is a family-owned six-store network specializing in sales, service, installation, inspection and financing of automotive service equipment. It is a division of Automotive Parts Headquarters Inc. and has grown to become a leading equipment provider in the Midwest.
In addition to the Benco business, this position leads the APH tool business and has direct P&L responsibility through our corporate-owned and independent-owned parts stores. This role reports to the President/CEO and will work closely with the APH Marketing, Merchandising, and Inventory Teams to build, hone and execute the right tool & equipment strategy. Leading the Benco team to grow our market share, this position will also collaborate extensively with the Corporate Store Management Team and our Independent Customers to support the Benco Equipment business. In total, this is a $30M business.
The Team
The current Benco team has over 50 team members in six Benco locations: Eau Claire, Hopkins, Sioux Falls, Bismarck, Fargo and St. Cloud. Each location is led by a Site Manager and the Benco leadership team includes an Operations Manager and a Sales Development Manager.
The Position
The General Manager will coach the team, identify and develop talent, work with suppliers, explore/develop opportunities, work with key customers and potential customers, build and execute a marketing plan, infuse technology and lead profitable growth in the Benco locations. As a member of the APH Product Committee, this person will have oversight of APH/Auto Value’s tool & equipment program which includes negotiation with and purchase of all Benco equipment/inventory from suppliers and work with the Merchandising Team to recommend product offerings to the Product Committee. In collaboration with our Non-App/PBE/Tool & Equipment Merchandising Manager, the Benco GM will support relationships with our tool & equipment suppliers, to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship—from both a sales and product management standpoint. They will be a key point-of-contact for our most significant tool & equipment customers and potential customers. This role sets the example and standard of fair and ethical business practices and ensures their team lives up to that standard. The Benco GM ensures all information is up-to-date and accurate, including documentation relating to customers, pricing, inventory, operating processes, compensation plans, and reporting. They stay informed regarding changes and progress in the auto equipment industry with management techniques and innovative ideas to make the operation more efficient. The Benco GM will utilize strong communication skills that require a commitment to clear and, whenever possible, succinct messaging and will pragmatically consider what needs to be conveyed to the right audience(s) at the right time.
The Opportunity
This position’s priority will be to profitably grow and integrate Benco’s product and service offering within our geographical footprint and beyond. This person will help the Benco team actively market a broader portfolio of products, while helping the Auto Value stores leverage the full-service (install/maintenance/repair) offering that Benco provides.
Crafting The Right Inventory Mix
This position will provide stocking suggestions to our inventory team to maximize the return on our inventory investment and maximize sales opportunities in our corporate and independent stores. In other words—we need to be sure we have the right tool & equipment inventory on our store shelves—not too little, not too much, and not the wrong inventory. We need the right product on our shelves—clean, fresh and in-demand!
