Overview

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Public Safety is recruiting for Security Officers (Security Guard) for Day and Evening Shifts. Under direct supervision, performs security activities to protect and safeguard students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Protect University buildings and property during normal campus operations and special events. The selected incumbent will ensure the safety of the University community in compliance with Departmental Policies and Procedures.

This is an entry-level opportunity to become a Security Officer at UMB. New hires are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus (half paid within 30 days, half after probation). Current UMB employees are not eligible.

Ideal Candidate

Primary Duties

  • Secures and monitors access control at all entrances and exits to buildings and property.
  • Patrols buildings and grounds and notifies appropriate personnel when problems and life safety threats arise.
  • Completes logs and reports as instructed.
  • Assists with traffic control, crowd control, and parking enforcement.
  • Responds to routine inquiries from staff, students, and visitors.
  • Maintains communication with appropriate personnel utilizing equipment such as two-way radios and telephones.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Experience: None.

Preferred Experience: Prior security experience preferred. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license strongly preferred.

Other

Clery Act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for education or experience on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits equaling one year of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Ability to follow oral and written instructions; to complete basic reports; to detect situations imperiling life, safety, and property; to perform extensive sitting, standing, and walking; to communicate effectively; to operate two-way radios and telephones.

Conditions of Employment

Applicants must submit to and successfully pass a thorough background investigation. Candidates may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. A valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license may be required. Employees may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Compensation and Benefits Note

Hiring Range: $40,315 - $44,878.05 (pre-probation), commensurate with education and experience. Note: New hires will receive a 2.5% adjustment to base salary upon successful completion of the probationary period.
