Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature and Culture
Position Summary
The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures at Rutgers University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature and Culture, beginning September 1, 2026. The candidate will teach undergraduate courses at all year levels and MA seminars, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs in Japanese and Asian Studies.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate courses at all year levels and MA seminars, standard two courses per semester.
Develop undergraduate and graduate programs in Japanese and Asian Studies.
Conduct scholarly research in literature, cultural studies, film studies, or visual cultures.
Engage in service to the department and university.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Japanese with a specialty in literature, cultural studies, film studies, and/or visual cultures, completed by September 1, 2026.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.
Fluency in English and Japanese.
Commitment to scholarly research, teaching excellence, and service.

Teaching portfolio.
Sample publication or thesis chapter.
Three letters of reference.

Salary
The academic year salary will not be less than $82,110 based on the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the faculty union and Rutgers University.
