Position Overview
Education and Training Specialist – Career Service position with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Office of Conservation Engagement and Education’s Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network. Responsibilities
Coordinate training, development, supervision, and support for youth educational programs and facility operations at the Everglades Youth Conservation Center. Assist with design and implementation of EYCC site‑specific conservation education programs and resources. Lead and participate in hands‑on educational programming, including field trips, summer camps, fishing clinics, partner events, and outreach. Support seasonal staff and volunteers; maintain camp and educational supplies and equipment. Integrate FYCCN educational curricula, family activities, and conservation programs into EYCC offerings. Administer all summer camp programs, youth, and family programs as assigned; supervise activities during summer camp. Assist with animal husbandry, cover for other animal care staff, and provide guidance/training to new staff. Ensure education programs comply with American Camp Association standards and maintain safety, risk management, and reporting. Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, stakeholders, constituents, and partners throughout in‑person, by telephone, and at program/event interactions. Promote EYCC programs and facility to the general public, specialty groups, partners, and respond to email/phone communications promptly. Participate in meetings, email communications, and collaborate with FYCCN and FWC staff and Partners. Maintain effective working relationships; work independently, take initiative, and solve problems creatively. Assist with program tracking, data entry/management, and analysis using Customer Service Management System(s) and Microsoft Excel. Assist with facility operations outside of education programs as required, including food service, janitorial cleaning, campground host duties, and ground keeping. Minimum Qualifications
Six years of professional experience in natural science or education, with at least two years in outdoor recreation, wildlife conservation field work, or conservation. Or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university plus two years of experience in outdoor recreation and/or natural science. Or master’s degree plus one year of experience in outdoor recreation and/or natural science. Or doctorate may substitute for required experience. Prior experience in outdoor recreation and/or natural science is a plus. Requirements
Contingent on satisfactory criminal history check (fingerprint‑based). Valid Florida driver license and good driving record. Occasional travel for meetings and events (1–25%). Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (ET) with weekend and after‑hours work during rental use groups, special events, and summer camp. Complete a swimming skills evaluation within one month of employment. Complete prerequisite swimming skills evaluation for American Red Cross Lifeguarding within two months. Complete kayaking and canoeing skills assessment within two months. Complete full training program within eight months: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification; Lifeguard certification; American Canoe Association Level 2 Kayak Skills Course; American Canoe Association Level 1 Canoe Skills Course; Boater Safety Certification; USA Archery Level 2 Instructor Certification; Hunter Safety Certification; Fishing and Boating Camp Training; Project WILD Facilitator Certification. Strong program facilitation and presentation skills for large groups across all age ranges. Independent, self‑motivated, and problem‑solving ability. Effective verbal and written communication. Advanced Microsoft Office Suite proficiency. Planning, organization, and coordination of work assignments for self and others. Team‑player and collaborative skills with stakeholders and partners. Professional and sensitive handling of diverse audiences. Ability to evaluate training and instructional materials and develop procedures. Strong swimming skills for aquatic rescues. Intermediate to advanced canoeing and kayaking skills. Bow drawing and archery range supervision. Lift up to 55 lbs for canoes, kayaks, and camp equipment. Travel and vehicle operation in adverse weather conditions. Operating firearms safely and hunter safety curriculum. Preferred: intermediate to advanced fishing knowledge and skills.
