Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The School of Music is part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, a community of artists with over 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students. CVPA is the largest visual and performing arts unit within the University of North Carolina system and is recognized for its comprehensive array of graduate programs and the success of its graduates. The School of Music enrolls over 550 undergraduate and graduate students.
With a basis in rigorous professional training in musical performance, theory and teaching, coupled with a versatile liberal arts curriculum, Music students experience a deep, well‑rounded education at every level of study, preparing them for a diverse range of careers across the spectrum of music and beyond. Beyond the classroom, our students enjoy a wide range of opportunities to experience and perform in concerts and musical ensembles across a wide range of genres and cultures, from classical to chamber music to modern jazz. Studies in music have been offered at UNCG since its opening in 1892. Courses for music majors who were looking to teach or perform were offered in solfeggio, ear training, and history of music. Beginning in 1912, the school started offering more musical theory class options which included counterpoint analysis, melody writing, and elementary form. Today, the university offers areas of study in music education, performance, musicology, ethnomusicology, composition, and music theory.
Position Summary The School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for an Assistant Professor of String Bass to start August 1, 2026.
We seek an artist/teacher committed to inclusive pedagogy and with demonstrated experience engaging students from diverse musical, social, and cultural backgrounds. The ideal candidate is a highly accomplished and versatile musician‑teacher dedicated to access and excellence for all students. They will be a skilled and successful teacher of undergraduate and graduate students. They will fulfill duties and responsibilities commensurate with academic positions at a leading institution. The successful candidate will teach a studio of undergraduate and graduate string bass students. The successful candidate will be committed to contributing to the musical and intellectual life of the school and fostering engagement throughout the university and in the community. As a member of the School of Music faculty, the Assistant Professor of Bass will contribute to ongoing inclusive excellence initiatives in the school.
Minimum Qualifications
Master of Music degree or equivalent professional experience.
Experience teaching classical bass.
Ability to teach electric bass students in the Popular Music & Technology program.
Performance experience in a variety of genres and musical styles and/ or experience teaching and performing in more than one style or tradition.
Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive and collaborative faculty, staff, and student environment as a team member at UNCG.
Preferred Qualifications
DMA or equivalent professional experience.
Evidence of artistic excellence in performance.
Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
Evidence of successful recruiting practices.
Ability to work with a variety of ensembles based on the needs of the department.
Demonstrated experience mentoring and teaching students from a wide range of backgrounds.
Demonstrated experience enhancing teaching and professional/creative practice through innovation and fostering belonging.
