Assistant Professor in Community and Regional Planning
Position Summary: The Department of Geography and Planning at Appalachian State University invites applications for a nine‑month, tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in Community and Regional Planning (CRP), beginning fall 2026. The CRP program emphasizes teaching, research, and community engagement that supports strong urban, small‑town, and rural communities. Housed alongside Geography, the program offers students a solid foundation in GIScience and Planning, with many pursuing double majors or minors across the two fields. Students from other departments also frequently add Planning as a second major or minor.
Applicants should be prepared to contribute to a growing program that emphasizes active learning, student growth, and scholarly excellence. Faculty are expected to teach up to six courses per year, including introductory courses (Town, City, and Regional Planning), general education offerings, and intermediate and advanced undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses aligned with the faculty member’s expertise.
Responsibilities
Teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate courses in Community and Regional Planning, including but not limited to food systems, housing, community and economic development, transportation, environmental policy, and climate‑ready communities.
Develop and deliver engaging, student‑centered instruction that integrates community‑based projects, GIS tools, and professional development opportunities.
Engage in scholarly research and community‑based research, pursuing opportunities for publication, conference presentations, and funding.
Participate in departmental service, curriculum development, and outreach activities that strengthen the Planning program and its partnerships with local communities.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Planning (or a closely related field) completed or expected by July 1, 2026.
Minimum of one semester of college‑level teaching experience.
Evidence of teaching excellence at the university level.
Strong research agenda in Planning, with a focus on community and economic development or environmental planning.
Expertise that complements departmental strengths; community and environmental planning are particularly welcome.
Experience as a practitioner and/or AICP certification (or intent to obtain within three years).
Commitment to working in and contributing to a collegial department that supports diverse student populations.
License/Certification Required AICP certification or willingness to pursue it is desirable.
