IPS - Rubbercraft Mechanical Design Engineer IPS - Rubbercraft, a part of Integrated Polymer Solutions, seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to develop elastomeric components and precision mechanical systems for aerospace, defense, and industrial markets. This entry‑level role emphasizes mechanical design, materials science, and advanced manufacturing.

About IPS Integrated Polymer Solutions (IPS) is a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced materials and engineered components for high‑value end markets such as aerospace, defense, medical, semiconductors, robotics, and energy. IPS owns 10 brands including AkroFire, ABBA Roller, Icon Aerospace Technology, IRP Medical, MAST Technologies, Northern Engineering Sheffield (NES), Rubbercraft, Swift Textile Metalizing (STM), RMB Products, and SPIRA Manufacturing.

About Rubbercraft Rubbercraft specializes in precision‑engineered elastomeric components for aerospace, defense, space, energy, and industrial applications. With over a century of expertise, it designs aerodynamic seals, fireproof seals, inflatable canopy seals, flexible rubber connectors, space ablatives, EMI solutions, and elastomeric tooling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will develop and optimize elastomeric components and sealing solutions for aerospace and defense applications. Key responsibilities include:

Mechanical Design & Development

Design custom elastomeric components, seals, and polymer‑based solutions for aerospace and defense.

Create 3‑D CAD models, technical drawings, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks or CATIA in 3DX PLM (ENOVIA).

Design and test fixtures, including 3‑D printing applications.

Perform FEA analysis—elastomers and composite nonlinear analysis.

Optimize designs for manufacturability, durability, and cost‑efficiency in extreme environments.

Documentation & Compliance

Develop engineering documentation, quality test proposals, and reports.

Ensure designs meet FAA, AS9100, ISO 9001, and MIL‑SPEC requirements.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to maintain customer and regulatory compliance.

Create technical compliance matrices and material data.

Collaboration & Support

Partner with manufacturing, quality, and lab teams to transition designs from concept to production.

Support Engineering Department requests and Configuration Control Board committee.

Assist in prototype development, validation testing, and troubleshooting for aerospace and defense.

Collaborate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams on engineering specifications and project requirements.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

Research and collaborate with the lab to integrate new elastomeric materials, compound formulations, and manufacturing techniques.

Support lean engineering initiatives to improve design efficiency and production processes.

Stay updated on emerging aerospace sealing technologies and industry best practices.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field.

2–3 years of experience in mechanical design, elastomeric components, or aerospace/defense manufacturing.

Experience with high‑precision mechanical design, elastomers, and composite materials is a plus.

Familiarity with aerospace industry standards is advantageous.

Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills

Proficiency in 3‑D CAD (SolidWorks and/or CATIA).

Strong GD&T (ASME Y14.5) knowledge.

Understanding of manufacturing processes: 3‑D printing, rubber molding, polymer extrusion, CNC machining, coatings.

Soft Skills

Problem solving and analytical skills.

Effective communication—verbal, written, and teamwork.

Attention to detail and time‑management for multiple projects.

Preferred (Not Required)

Knowledge of FAA, AS9100, MIL‑SPEC, ITAR regulations.

FEA (Abaqus) experience and materials science background.

Experience with aerospace OEMs, defense contractors, high‑performance industrial manufacturers.

Background in seal design, EMI shielding, high‑temperature polymers.

Experience with PLM systems such as 3DX.

Benefits Rubbercraft offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, short‑ and long‑term coverage, accident insurance, critical illness, basic and supplemental life insurance, employee assistance, retirement savings with matching, and development opportunities.

Rubbercraft is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Veterans/Disabled – Affidative Action Employer.

This position requires ITAR‑subject information. All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR (Green Card holder, U.S. permanent, political asylee, refugee).
